Saturday, April 14,  In Modesto: Workshops with Marcelo Solis,

Jacobs Fine Dining, 2501 McHenry.

Two workshops during the day, pre-milonga class and performance.

2:30 p.m. Musicality. Make your dancing shine. Move to the beat of tango in the embrace. Technical details for musical improvisation. Posture, weight shift, use rhythm and space. Practical application for the milonga floor: corridas and pauses.

4 p.m. Focus on connection. Make your partner shine. Technical details for clear lead and graceful follow. Use of the partner's space. Practical application for the milonga floor: turns with sacadas.

One class: $20 per person, both classes: $35

MILONGA THAT EVENING

7:30 p.m.  pre-milonga class: Make your tango beautiful. Musicality and connection: small and often overlooked details that make a big difference.

8:30 - midnight, open dancing (milonga)

10 p.m. Performance by Marcelo and Olga Matveeva

Marcelo Solis, just returned from Buenos Aires where he established a new school for Tango, as well as judging the U.S.A tango Championships at the Argentine Tango U.S.A. Festival last weekend,specializes in traditional tango  from the 1930s and '40s. He teaches Buenos Aires social dance styles, not stage tango, focuses on connections between partners and music with exercises and explanations in the fundamentals. He has taught and performed in Argentina, USA, Canada and Europe. Now based in San Francisco, he returns to Buenos Aires several times a year to teach and perform at major milongas like Salon Canning, Confiteria Ideal, Nuevo Chique and Cachirulo.

A limited number of private lessons are also available on Sunday.  Fee for private lessons in $80. If you want to take advantage of this opportunity, contact me at

Tango By The River, 128 J Street, Old Sacramento - 8 - 11 p.m.  Practilonga - combines the best of a practica and a milonga.  For the first fifteen minutes (8:00-8:15 pm), Donna will teach  a "Tango Tip for the Day."  It might be anything from refining technique in an embellishment, a step useful for navigating the dance floor, a stretch that is particularly good for dancers, etc.  $5 entry.
