Dear Friends,

As part of the activities and events related to the commemoration of the 150th year of the 1857 Revolt, there is a plan to organise heritage walks through the northern ridge covering monuments directly or indirectly related to the uprising. These walks are being planned for university students (mainly history) across colleges. We are meeting on Friday, 21 September at 2.30 PM (Venue: Deptt. of History, MA Class Room, the room immediately in front of the stairs) to discuss this. Please do come for the meeting.

Dear Chitra,

Sorry to know that you would not be able to make it for the meeting. Will post the walk schedule.. In a two-hour long walk will it be possible for us to cover Pir ghaib, Choburja, Flag Staff Tower,  Mutiny Memorial and Bara Hindu Rao? Should we cover the coronation grounds as well?

Dear Srimanjari

thanks - I guess you could decide on coronation grounds at the meeting. IP students will be very keen on joining.

I also wanted to inform you and MH students about a meeting tomorrow at Arts Fac, ampitheatre (behind the activity centre) at 12 noon in connection with the incidents of sexual harassment on Sunday, 16 September.

thanks

Dear Chitra,

We have decided to conduct about 15 to 20 walks from 1 November onwards. The walks will begin from the VC's office and initially towards the Flag Staff Tower and proceed towards Bara Hindu Rao (including the baoli there), Choburja, Pir Ghaib and the Mutiny Memorial. Amrita Tulika informed us that a similar walk last year was managed in about one and a half hour. We are planning a bilingual brochure covering these monuments (with sketches of the monuments and a brief description). The brochure would hopefully be ready by the time of the Alkazi Foundation Exhibition at the Conference Centre (26 Oct.- 20 Nov. 2008)Amrita Tulika, Saumya and i have decided to jointly do the write-up, Sanjay will do the text in Hindi and if we circulate it on the net others can also chip in. We have now decided to  meet on 1 October (Monday) at 11 AM at the Department of History. Hope to meet you there.

dear Srimanjari, Chitra, saumya, Sanjay and all others of the Delhi group.(asaatza-i-Dehli):  asaatza is techinically the plural of 'Ustaad'] That would make the title of that famous Sheikh Mukhtar film a mouthful!).

Looks very promising. Do send me a draft of the text for the brochure, if that is possible.

Dear Srimanjari, Chitra, Shahid, Saumya, Sanjay, Upinder, Pragati and others,

I am no Ustaad of Modern Delhi,(except in the technical sense that I happen to be teaching this paper!) nor do I claim to have ' original ' material on these sites. In fact, I was simply going to use the material that Dr. Baker, Ustaad of all of us, used for one of the walks, and a student's project, if available. It seems, too much information spoiled the fun! Let other friends venture out and make their own discoveries while I chip in, if necessary.

Dear Amrita
Would you be able to post a basic draft of the brouchure from the material that you have on this list so that we can build upon it. Maybe others on the list - all technical ustaads/asaatza, at least -  can also chip in if they have some interesting information about the monuments.

Dear Saumya,

I do not have any material on me right now . In any case, I was not supposed to prepare the draft for the brochure. I do not wish to be associated with this project and I think you and other friends would undrestand and appreciate it.

I also want to request you to co-ordinate the activities of the modern delhi group. I have done it for a year and I do not want to continue with it any more.

thanks,

Dear All,

The preliminary draft for the brochure on heritage walks is being circulated as a file attachment. It is subject to comments, changes etc. Can we do it by this evening, so that we mail it to Sanjay for translation?
