A series of events will be organized at the University of Delhi during the academic year 2007-08 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the 1857 Revolt. Apart from the fact that this was an event of great significance in the history of modern India, it is also very relevant that a great deal of the activity associated with this event was centred in places in and around what is today the University North Campus. The events are being organized by teachers and students of various Departments and Colleges of the University as a contribution to generating a wider interest in the Revolt both within and beyond the confines of the university community. The following events have already been planned:
The exhibition will showcase a selection of 19th Century photographs from the Alkazi Collection relating to three sectors of the Uprising: Delhi, Kanpur and Lucknow, with a focus on Delhi.
Seminar organized by the Department of Germanic and Romance Studies
The seminar will focus on continental European responses to the 1857 events – literary texts, press reports, etc that appeared in languages other than English – and their wider implications.
The seminar will focus on the following areas: Post-1947 Appraisals of the Revolt, The Revolt in Popular and Folk literature, The Revolt in Delhi, The End of the Delhi College Experiment, The Representation of the Revolt in Art, 1857 and Warfare
