Hey Folks!
My name's Britte, I live in Portland, OR, and I'm starting a reading group of
The Deficit Myth by
Stephanie Kelton.
A few months ago I attended an excellent primer to Modern Monetary Theory by the
Rosa Luxemburg Foundation and the
Movement School--and was hooked! I have zero background in finance and economics; I am an instructional designer and K-12 educator in ELA, ESL, and Theatre Arts by trade. However, when the moderators suggested
The Deficit Myth as next steps, I had a feeling that this was a text that would speak to a wider audience. And, as an active member of the
Democratic Socialists of America (DSA)
National Political Education Committee (NPEC), I feel it imperative to push my knowledge of democratic socialism into arenas that would financially quantify how we as a country/community get to a Green New Deal, Jobs Guarantee, Medicare for All, etc. I wanna get there in my lifetime; I gotta find a way how.
So that's my story, I'd like to know yours! If you're interested in joining this reading group--whether you've read the text before or you too would like to dive into the world of MMT on an introductory level--hit me up! Feel free to send this message to your family, friends and/or colleagues who you think might want in too. And PLEASE share this message with prospective guest moderators! It would be ideal to have some MMT "experts" in the Zoom room!
The brass tax:
--Open and inviting learning environment
--Read one chapter per month (and maybe an accompanying article suggested by group participants/guest moderators)
--Attend one reading group Zoom session per month that's 60-90 mins long
--Participants democratically choose a time window that's inclusive of East-West coasts timetables
--Potential for political organizing collaboration in the future, but not an expectation for joining
Next steps:
--Email me at
brit...@gmail.com stating your name, city, working email, and interests for joining "The Deficit Myth" reading group
by Wednesday December 1st. Please write in the subject line: "DEFICIT MYTH".
--I will send a scheduling poll out to interested participants on 12/2.
Comradely Yours,
Britte
P.S. Is anyone here in possession of a discussion guide/discussion questions for this text? I'm not seeing any on the interwebz thus far.
P.P.S. Please consider purchasing the book from an independent bookseller, like
here.
