I went to the Google Group for modelsim-pe-student-edition and the
three workarounds for the failure to install did not work.

I have an older Pentium 4, 2GHz desktop computer running Windows XP
Home Edition with Service Pack 3, 1GB RAM, and 25 GB available hard
disk space.

I am able to download the file and save it to the C:\\Program Files
folder. But when I double click on the modelsim-
pe_student_edition.exe file icon to install it, the following occurs:

Open File - Security panel opens up and provides Run and Cancel
buttons. I click on the Run button.

A panel opens up titled, Unpacking ModelSim PE Student Edition and a
horizontal status bar runs. In a couple of seconds, the message
Unpacking Data.Tag message is displayed and then the panel closes.

The cursor becomes an hour glass for about 7 seconds and then goes
back to the normal arrow cursor.

Nothing further happens.

The three workarounds listed on the Google Group site for modelsim-pe-
student-edition under "Can't install modelsim" did not work:

1) I tried opening the modelsim-pe_student_edition.exe file with
Winzip, but it's not zipped in the first place. I tried zipping it up
and then unzipping it, but after doing so, double-clicking on the new
modelsim-pe_student_edition.exe file obtained exactly the same
results.

2) I ran modelsim-pe_student_edition.exe from the command prompt
window, but no additional message appeared. The same thing as before
happened. It displayed the Unpacking Data.Tag message, but nothing
happened.

3) I went to the Task Manager for Windows and made sure no other
programs were running. But there weren't any other programs running.

So I am essentially stuck on this computer and cannot get ModelSim set
up. I would still like to fully install ModelSim as this desktop
computer has a very large monitor which would be great to display
simulations and waveforms on.

In a sense, I did find a workaround. I was able to get modelsim-
pe_student_edition installed on a new laptop computer which runs
System7 Home Premium with 4 GB RAM. I had to install the .exe file in
a folder directly under the C: drive. System7 permissions would not
allow me to download the file to C:\\Program Files. So far I've done
a basic compile of one of the example programs and it does seem to
compile (i.e., it does seem to work). I would still like to get
ModelSim installed on the desktop due to the larger monitor.

Does anyone have any ideas?

What you are describing looks like an old Install Shield bug I've seen
on XP. You should be able to extract the .exe download file using
Winzip (I used 7zip) into a temp folder. Don't worry about it being
a .exe file, Winzip should be able to extract it. The Install Shield
bug is in the extraction portion of the install process so using an
extraction tool like Winzip or 7zip is the only way I've been able to
get around it.

Once extracted into the temp directory execute the setup.exe to start
the actual installation program.

Tom,

This is another manifestation of the same install shield bug. Usually
you don't see an error message but when you do it complains "not
enough disk space" when in fact there is. The main problem is that
install shield can't detect how much disk space is used/unused when
the actual disk space being used falls into a certain boundary. I'm
not sure what that boundary is but the work around is to delete 1/2 Gb
off the disk or add 1/2 Gb to the disk is enough to get out of this no-
mans-land of disk usage that install shield can't detect. I've run
across this a couple of times on my old XP system and solved it by
copy/paste the modelsim-pe_student_edition_x.x.exe 2-3 times to
consume enough disk space to get past this install bug then after the
install I just delete them.

I had the same problem.

Just restart in safe mode (hold F8 during startup) and install.
Remember to save the link you get after the installation process as you will not be able to open it in safe mode.

Hi same problem here,

But "Run programm as Administrator" by right-klicking on the setup

AND

Exiting  "Logitech Setpoint" (Mouse/Keyboard settings)

worked for me.

It seems that the setup has problems with the Logitech Software.

I can confirm the compatibility issue with Logitech SetPoint software. After closing the Logitech app, the setup ran fine.

I just wanted to thank you for recommending exiting Logitech setpoint.

I was getting frustrated not being able to install modelsim and had tried everything I could think of and other suggestions I found including extracting the file with 7zip.

As soon as I closed setpoint, Modelsim setup ran fine. In fact, about 7-8 instances of install shield opened at once, obviously from previous attempts of running the setup.

Thanks again!

After installing Windows 10, modelsim would no longer install. I read somewhere that Google Chrome may need to be stopped to make the setup window appear.

This did not work for me, but after stopping SearchUI.exe in task manager the, the setup window appear and began installing. The SearchUI process restarted during the modelsim installation. modelsim setup appeared to freeze, but after closing SearchUI again in task manager, the installation completed. If you do not close the SearchUI the second time, you will not complete the end of the setup where you are able to request a license file.

Hope this helps.
