 Is there a free design compiler I could use for synthesis after modelsim simulation?

It depends on your target, usually for most of FPGA boards there are free tools available on-line.

The targeted FPGA is from Altera. Could somebody provide the links for synthesis after modelsim simulation?

I didn't use Altera for long time now, but with a little google search I was able to find this:
http://www.altera.com/products/software/quartus-ii/web-edition/qts-we-index.html
Check taht it is what you're looking for, and do further search for the exact tools that you want if it was not.
