i have download the version 10.2a, and on startup (without any input), it displays an error message (shown in the attached picture) that closes the program. I have followed the installation instructions to the letter, and I have double-checked that my license is in the right place. Any help would be appreciated.

From a cmd prompt execute <modelsim_pe_edu_install>\win32pe_edu\vsim.exe.  This should give you additional error messages which you can post.  It may give us a better clue what's going on.

I'm on Windows 8, its an HP ENVY dv6 (in case that helps). also not a computer engineer or specialist. i'm majoring in electrical engineering, and i just need it to simulate files for my digital systems class.

I usually use Windows 7 for ModelSim but I have a Windows 8 system so I tested the download/install/compile/run and everything worked as expected.  I'm now sure what to tell you.  The behavior you are seeing looks like some kind of memory allocation failure so my guess is that there is something unique about your system that is causing this.

My suggestion would be to uninstall and download the student edition again.  Check the new download file with the old one to see if they are the same size.  When you reinstall make sure you use all the defaults (location/icon/path modification/etc.).  Once you have the new license file saved to the root modelsim directory test again and see if it works.  If not I'm not sure what to do.
