I can suggest a couple of things. I've been able to install and run the
Modelsim PE student edition on my new Lenovo 64-bit laptop which has
System7.
1) While ModelSim says they won't support the student edition, I've found
that tech support for their main products will respond to an email or two.
If you tell them you're a teacher, they'll probably talk with you. You
might try to contact them and ask them to send you a license.
2) You might try to uninstall and then re-install the student edition. I
had to do it a couple of times before I got it working. It seems easiest
and fastest to "Save" the download file to your desktop rather than "Run" it
directly from the download. The "Save" approach leaves an icon on the
desktop which you can then double-click to do the install.
3) Once I received a license and got the student edition working on my
laptop, I found that the 81 page tutorial is a little buggy. The very first
Verilog program from their examples wouldn't run and gave an error. I
assume that editing the code a bit will fix it and allow it to run, but I
haven't done that yet. By the way, the form to fill out which requests the
license is the same form that you fill in to request the download, which
doesn't do you any good if it doesn't appear the second time.
4) I tried to install the student edition on an older XP machine and never
could get it to install. After several hours, I gave up. The software
would download but not install. When I downloaded the software to the
desktop, it created an icon there, and then when I'd double-click the icon
to install it, it would start running as evidenced by a bar in a panel, and
then the panel would go away and nothing further would happen. The install
wouldn't finish. So if some of your students have 32-bit XP machines, they
may have some problems too.
5) I'll send you my license file although I don't think it'll work as it
probably has embedded in it a unique MIC number for each computer.

Subject: [modelsim-pese] Modelsim PE Student Edition 10.0a installation
error on Windows 7 - 64 bit Computer
Hi Modelsim PE Student Edition fans out there,
i have a problem with an installation of the newest Version 10.0a on my sony
vaio with windows 7 and 64 bit system. The Installation is made correct, but
at the end of the installation process i got no window with an license
request, but the Error: "Severe CloseFile Failed". So i have no license
file, but i could start the simulator. When i want to simulate, i got an
error with the not available license.
Is it possible, to get a license WITHOUT the installation process??? I have
tried to get one license when inserting the link in my IE browser i got,
when installing Modeisim PE Student Edition 10.0a on another 32 bit System
(which has correct function), but then the license request only says, to
download the newest version. I teach VHDL and my students just got 64 bit
Computers, and they want to make there diplomathesis and my VHDL lessons in
a laboratory on these machines. Could you help me please? Do you have any
idea, what i could do? Is it a special software, which cause these error
(Antivirus, ie protection, ...), or is this just an error caused by the not
supported 64 bit system? Will there be a 64 bit version of Modelsim PE
Student Edition? Maybe 10.0.b? And when will this version be available?
Best regards
Digitalkurt
