The PhD student will investigate how induction and suppression of plant
defence affect the food web of organisms inhabiting the plant and the
community structure of plant-inhabiting arthropods. This entails
studying the role of interspecific competition among herbivores and the
role of predation. Specific questions are whether other herbivores can
benefit from the reduced direct defence of plants attacked by the
defence-suppressing spider mite and whether this reduced direct defence
affects indirect plant defences through natural enemies. A large part of
the research will consist of field experiments, carried out at the
Federal University of Viçosa, Minas Gerais, Brazil.
