As a result of the recent discussions, I got a private email asking
about Modelica and I realized that this must be a bit confusing for
some. So, I wanted to *very briefly* explain what Modelica is and
what my interest is in it.

Modelica is a non-proprietary modeling language that was developed in
the late 90's. The goal was to have a standard language that would
allow mathematical models to be exchanged between different tools.
The language incorporates many modern ideas from software engineering
(e.g. it is heavily object-oriented) and also tries to leverage many
advances made in the last 20 or so years in symbolic manipulation to
solve differential-algebraic equations.

In the interest of full disclosure, I am the Secretary of the Modelica
Association board and I also wrote a book on Modelica about 7 years
ago.

A common question I'm asked is "where can I download Modelica". The
answer to this question is generally not what people really want to
know. This is because "Modelica" is just a language and the only
thing to download is the language specification (which is pretty dry
reading). What people usually want is to know how to download a tool
that can do something useful with Modelica. For that I would refer
people to the Tools page on the web site (http://www.modelica.org/
tools) which includes both free and commercial implementations.

Sorry for the slightly off-topic post but I just thought it would be
better to answer the private question in public so that others who had
similar questions would get their answers as well.

Mike - you are those Michael M Tiller, which had written the book "Introduction to Physical Modeling with Modelica" – it was the first book that I have read about Modelica... J
