Hello, I was wondering if there was a newer ford 4 speed transmission
that would fit into a 29 coupe with very little conversion?????
Someone had told me that one from the late 30's or early 40's would
work. Looking for a lower engine rpm in hi gear. Thank you in advance
for any help or ideas.

Sheridan's Repair (Tim Sheridan-616-837-8474) offers a very nice 4 spd kit
for a Model A. I have installed several of these and they are super nice.
The trans if from an 80's Ford Ranger, so it is fully syncronized. It bolts
up to the Model A Bell-Housing. The shifter ends up being a couple of inches
further back, but very close to stock. The 4th gear is O.D. and really lets
you cruize.
The Brake x-shaft has to be dropped down about 1/4", easily done with some
washers. The Driveshaft tube gets shortened a few inches, so you have to
send that to him for the modification.
The kit runs about $1750, but is fully worth it with the added pleasure of
driving the Model A.
If you are near Maysville, I have a 1929 Tudor here with the trans that you
can take for a test-drive.

Sure it must be nice, cruising at low revs, but where do you stop? Is anyone objecting on originality grounds?
Hydraulic brakes would be nice (servo assisted), parabolic leaf springs and hydraulic shock absorbers, a decent heater and defrost, servo assisted steering, radial ply tyres, electronic ignition.....
Why not drop in a model B V8 while you're at it, eliminate that long stoke 4 cylinder roughness. A model A is a model A

LOL... I hear ya... I have a Tudor and luv the whine, vibration, squalling
brakes, and top rpms. She is my girl. I just new lots of folks were going to
these late model 5 spd trannys but with to much mods to the car itself. I am
building this one for my wife (29 coupe) and just gathering ideas.

Thanks for your input - Del

Thank you for your reply. I live in California so I must pass on the test
drive (wish I could though). What does the kit come with? Out here the boys
are using chevy s-10 trannys but the mods to the driveline, clutch, and
brake x-shaft are greater than what you describe. I have a 29 tudor too, I
just got a 29 standard (6/17/10) and it is the one I plan to make a cruiser
out of since my wife has laid claim to this car.

Thank you once again - Del

Kit includes Trans, modified to fit a Model A Bellhousing and U-joint
assembly. Shortened driveshaft, shortened driveshaft tube, Model A Style
gearshift. Instructions.

Give him a call, he's a good guy.

Del,

It might be easier and less expensive to install a high speed ring and pinion in your differential. With low gear as low as it is, I don't think you would have too much trouble starting off in 1st with the high speed rear end. Of course, if you live in a hilly area, it might result in a lot of downshifting to 2nd on hills. The car would retain it's original appearance, though.

Just a thought.

Hal,

I had not thought of that. Might be something to think about. Anyone out there tried this?

Thanks for your input.

The model A Ford was built to last. It was also built to drive, and drive it does. You are fine with the stock set up untill you have to get on that special section of road were everybody is going 70 MPH and you have to turn around all of your rear view merriors so the traffic running up on your rear does not scare the crap out of you...So pick one there are choiches, gears trannys and overdrives....Stick one in and enjoy your Model A...Henery wont care about your choice, He is just glad to see the best Ford ever built to be on the road and the driver wear'en a smile.
