It should be easy to remove the gear shift tower, sometimes its hard if the
transmission is stuck in 1st or 3rd. After you get the tower off, look
inside the tower and you'll see how the shifter is supposed to move the
shift rails back and forth via the shift dogs. The shifter ball is probably
worn away, and the shift dogs are probably worn too. This would be a good
time to replace the shift lever, or at least take the time to repair the
worn areas by welding and grinding back to the original shape. If you don't
want to go to that much trouble, just move the dogs back to the neutral
position, and make sure the lever is in the slots like it is supposed to be,
(you'll see what I am talking about).
Then reach down in the transmission and move the gears back to neutral, and
put everything back together again. If you don't repair the worn areas, then
just be more careful when shifting so you don't have the same problem again.
Good luck, but I am sure you will get it fixed!
