Serf/1.3.8 (mod_pagespeed/1.11.33.4-0) in accesslogs

Hey Guys,

Can someone explain to me what this pagespeed serf agent does? I know this agent optimizes contents but i am not yet familiar with how to regulate the optimization and filters involved with this. 
I am currently going over documentation and it's going to take me couple of days to do some more research.

I see over 50-60k entries like this in the logs per day and I'm not sure whether it affects the normal traffic coming to the server. Any best practice need to be followed for this?  The reason I am asking this because lately we have been seeing more traffic on our servers and we are in process of tuning apache/tomcat connections along with enabling/disabling pagespeed filters. Thank you so much in advance!

Mod_pagespeeds needs to get to the original resources so it can optimize them. The pagespeed serf agent is responsible for fetching these resources from your server. 

For tuning your server, monitoring the console and logging statistics may be helpful: https://modpagespeed.com/doc/console

Also, the module offers an alternative to http(s) fetching, which is loading static files directly:
