Engaging students in augmented reality using apps of mobile devices.
Trever Reeh
9/20/2012
The type of mLearning is augmented reality for teachers. The project goal is to create a place where teachers can use and implement augmented reality apps to engage and motivate students in the classroom. My target audience for the project is teachers, especially teachers in urban settings where students struggle to find engaging benefits of school.
The type of technology and infrastructure that can be expected is normally high for it taking part in developed nations. Hopefully this will be able to be across platforms from Apple to Android, then hopefully a online web application. I have been thinking of not using social media, and looking for ways to directly implementing this into schools. The mobile devices will be more mobile applications.
Normally, as a teacher myself I look for great apps that are free. I would like to make this program free, at school districts most of the schools now have iPads or other devices at their disposal. If not some schools are going to a BYOD or BYOT for some schools. The stakeholders that might influence the project is school districts at the top level, then curriculum coordinators, and finally teachers who will implement this in their classrooms. Teachers can have students download the apps at home if they already have a device.
For a deadline or timeline for the project will be as follows below.
October 2012: Start Mobile App January 2013: Have working model. March 2013: Get accepted to have app on iTunes May 2013: Have Android app up and running. August 2013: Start working on web-based program. January 2014: Have web-based program running. May 2014: Have teachers and students be able to run their own code and create their own augmented reality apps.
When students walk into a classroom what do they normally see? They see white walls, with either a chalkboard or dry-erase board. Not anymore with this mobile app it lets students see what another world is like, with augmented reality students are transported from the school to a classroom that they learn, play, and grow in. Students are able in to interact with their mobile device with the real world in different scenarios that engage and motivate students to not only be in school, but like school. The app will let students engage with curriculum and teachers can set up lessons and activities that take advantage of augmented reality and play games that engage students in an educational and meaningful way.
The steps that I need to have a successful end result will be getting feedback about what schools are looking for, what problems they currently have, and what needs to be accomplished first. Secondly, at MIT App Inventor will be second, creating an app that takes advantage of other apps that are already on the market. Last, will be implementing it and constantly changing and adapting to new problems that can be solved. Some problems that I am not sure about are still few and far between, what I need to do is get started and work on the process. I know that problems will arise and I will look for suggestions in the MobiMOOC as well as other places on the web.

Hi Trever,
What school age group are you aiming?
I love the concept.

Hi Trever,
I am a visual girl so loved the concept of AR and students experiencing this amazing environment. Hope you caught up with Victor Alvarez's sessions on AR.
Cheers

Hi Trever, Enjoyed your proposal. Hope that this project will enable students to apply problem solving and interactions within school setting and beyond. Great way to bridge school and community. Can see potential for real world connections between curriculum and the community students live in. Linda

Sorry for the delayed response. I am aiming for middle to high school students. I did watch his presentation. Since most schools are cutting budgets and not letting students go on field trips and places to go see and explore. Augmented reality apps will be in demand and deliver that problem-based learning that students need to succeed in school and in college.
