CALL FOR PARTNERSHIP: Rio Creative Campaign to Promote the End of Oil Subsidies

Hello all from the Human Impacts Institute,

On our last MobilizeUS! call, we discussed joint actions we could take that are more on the creative end for Rio.  We have many ideas, but one that popped up was from Siri (Sp?) at Smith College and NRDC who has been doing photos of people with the sign "Separate Oil and State".  We are thinking that we'd love to partner with each of your groups and create a massive push for photos of people holding a sign that has this in their own language.  We would do on-the-ground outreach in Rio and then create a facebook page for the initiative with everyone's org.  On the sign template, we could also have your org logo to show that we are in this together.  

Right now, we are thinking of designing a template that says:

"Separate Oil and State.  End Fossil Fuel Subsidies Now!"

Perhaps, in Rio we could even do a flash mob around this idea......Thoughts?  Are you in?

Great idea – Earth Day Network is in.  Perhaps rather than writing “end fossil fuel subsidies” on the signs we should find an image that transcends language barriers.  Anyone have any ideas?

 

To help generate visibility on the ground we could print t-shirts with the image for the flash mob and distribute them at the conference (similar to TckTckTck’s efforts with I heart KP in Durban).

Hi Tara this is Siiri -

I'm so glad to hear that my photo petition has gathered further support! It's great to hear that the Human Impacts Institute is taking a lead on creating dialogue around ending fossil fuel subsidies, I was hoping it would be a key topic in Rio. 

I have attached a couple of pictures of what our petition looked like. We used several different signs but I'm sure a uniform sign and slogan would be ideal for this initiative. I like the slogan you proposed - "Separate Oil and State.  End Fossil Fuel Subsidies Now!" - it's more specific and outlines our "ask" (as opposed to just having the "Separate Oil and State" slogan we had mostly). However I agree that some kind of image would be helpful as well in order to make our statement universal. I would propose having both the slogan and some image if that is possible. (Also shirts would be great!!)

A Facebook group would be helpful as well - I set one up and invited students to upload their own pictures as well. However nobody really did :( so the group was composed of photos that our sustainability organization had taken around our campus. But I'm sure if this new group was formed we would have better luck!

Hi everyone,

This seems like a great idea and is definitely in line with We Canada's messaging. I've sent an email to my directors to see what they think in terms of capacity. I'll get back to you soon.

We were looking at doing a Global Day of Action for Rio+20 and shared the idea to our Canadian partners already. If we go ahead with the idea, I think it should be linked with people not going to Rio (make the link between Rio and our home countries) so the national media gets on board with us.

Also - we could perhaps feature some of those pictures in RioCentro's main hall, where they'll have booths for youth about "The Future We Want". Any org interested can feature a youth project. That could be it with a collage from pictures from around the world. It could also be electronic.

Does WE CANda have a calendar for Canadian Side Events?.

Yes, let's set up a call for this coming week. I am working on getting graphics together for this and it would be great for us to solidify logistics for the online photo component of the action, as well as the flash mob.

I've spoken with Nicolo, who said Peace Child was looking at mobilizing with the People's Summit on June 20th. We might want to see what's up then and maybe do it at the same time if messaging is similar. How set is 350.org on the 18th?

It has also come up that, if we are demanding to end fossil fuel subsidies, we have to keep in mind that right now these resources are core need for developing countries. So we must simultaneously ask for a switch to subsidize renewables, particularly for developing countries.

This is very important for them, and it would give us wider support, plus it's always good to couple a no with a yes, so I hope this can be clarified somehow.

(Also, the occupy rio statement demands to end FF subsidies now.)
