What's My Worth?
Thursday, October 2nd
5:30pm-6:30pm
Union Square South Plaza,
14th Street between Broadway and Park Avenue South, NY, NY
“What’s My Worth?” is a performance that is heavily influenced by environmental concerns. It began as a reaction to the 2008 economic downturn and an exploration of what artist Marie Christine Katz could do without. As she explored this through her journal, she found the less she spent, the less impact she also had on the world around her. For each meal she cooked at home, how many Styrofoam containers were saved? Is she deluding herself in thinking it made a difference? Using "waste" as props, Katz's materials--such as the lint from her dryers--disintegrate throughout the performance and the remaining sculptural elements are transformed into a makeshift installation. During this interactive performance, Katz gathers stories on how your choices affect the world around them and mark those stories with golden threads. Throughout, she presents her monologue, including elements of the shared experiences.

Ice Floe
Sunday, October 5th
12:40pm-1:20pm
SUBMERGE! NYC Marine Science Festival, Hudson River Park at Pier 26, The Pier 26 (Westside Highway just north of N Moore St) NY, NY
Connect with the austere beauty of the Arctic as you watch "Ice Floe", Jody Sperling's dance-for-camera movie compiling her residency with the 43-day science mission aboard the US Coast Guard Cutter Healy. As the scientists aboard the vessel investigated the thinning sea ice, Sperling explores the ice's movement through voluminous costuming and a dances that materializes natural forces into kinetic sculptural forms. As "floes" of the sea ice drift, crash together and form ridges, the film shows Sperling as a figure in the icescape, as well as a kind of icescape-in-miniature. A screening of the short film will be accompanied by a lecture with oceanographer Dr. Larry Pratt of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

Under My Umbrella
Saturday, October 11th
1:00pm-4:00pm
East River State Park, 90 Kent Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11211
Under My Umbrella is both a physical exhibition project as well as an online/art video project. It is inspired by climate change and the denial/debate upon its existence in reference to the art world’s denial/debate on its own future. Using broken and bent umbrellas found on the streets of NYC after large storms, Christina Massey will create an installation using these umbrellas as the frames for sculptural forms made by weaving in strips of painted canvas and linen that has itself been reused and repurposed from past artistic projects. During the event, Massey will be conducting a series of mini interviews about how/should the art world be adapting to social and environmental changes to be used online in continuation of the project.

Chalk Circle Change
Sunday, October 12th
2:00pm-4:00pm
Adam Clayton Powell State Office Building Plaza, 163 West 125th Street(at Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Boulevard/Seventh Avenue), New York, NY 10027
Chalk Circle Change is an interactive art project from Carl Landegger whose premise is to circle litter using sidewalk chalk, calling attention to it and acting as a leverage point to engage the community to pick it up. Circling what’s left behind leaves an impression that will make people think twice about their next move towards a trashcan or recycling bin. All it takes is a piece of chalk, the ability to draw a simple circle, and a bit of time to make a huge difference for the environment. The goal? Circle as many pieces of litter as possible to effect social change. Learn more here>>
Green Mondays at ICP! Sept-December
The Human Impacts Institute is excited to partner with the International Center of Photography to support conversation and action around environmental issues and creative communication. This fall, the photographs of Sebastião Salgado provide the springboard panel discussions, lectures, and film screenings addressing the urgent issue of climate change.
On Green Mondays—a series of lectures and conversations held in the galleries—scientists, activists, photographers, and others will explain the science behind climate change analysis and address critical topics such as fracking, greening the economy, and decarbonizing the city. Friday-evening gallery walk-throughs with climate scientists will contextualize Salgado’s photographs, region by region.
