A Recap of #STAMP2017: Station Access & Mobility Program

Here's wishing everyone a Happy New Year!

WRI India Sustainable Cities in collaboration with the Toyota Mobility Foundation, formally launched the Station Access and Mobility Program (STAMP) on December 22nd 2016 in Bengaluru.

The STAMP program will provide a challenge platform to identify and incubate first- and last-mile connectivity solutions to and from the metro stations. The program focuses on innovative solutions that leverage technology to provide high quality, environmentally sensitive and people-centric services, which may be related to feeder systems, parking facilities, universal access, walking and cycling modes, and safety and security measures.
The launch fittingly brought together key stakeholders working in urban mobility from all spheres including government, experts, civil society, and corporates. Panelists included Mr. Pradeep Singh Kharola, MD - BMRCL, Dr. Ekroop Caur, MD - BMTC, Dr. Ashwin Mahesh, CEO - Mapunity, Ms. Revathy Ashok, CEO - BPAC, Mr. Naveen Soni, VP - Toyota Kirloskar Motors (TKM), Mr. Prasanna Ganesh, Program Director - TMF, Mr. Amit Bhatt, Director - WRI India. The session was moderated by Mr. V. Ravichandar, civic evangelist.

The discussion focused on seamless, multi-modal integration for last-mile connectivity covering the following:
  • Physical integration primarily addresses the integration of the metro stations with other modes of transport through combined infrastructure for bus stops, rickshaws, bike sharing systems, etc.
  • Institutional integration refers to cooperation between different public and private sector agencies for implementing holistic public transit systems in which different transport modes complement one another.
  • Informational integration is a central focus area of STAMP, and refers to the deployment of technology to provide real-time information and service availability to users.
  • Fare integration addresses affordability and ease of use by providing common platforms for multi-modal transit. In Bengaluru, the BMTC is working on a common mobility card, which has the potential to integrate multi-modal travel, including metro and bus trips.
Other key takeaways from the event included the need for a more collaborative and participatory approach to include citizens and entrepreneurs, and the importance of government regulations in promoting private sector participation.
