Buses, in Indian cities, are undeniably the most indispensable mode of transport.
In the pre-COVID-19 world, 22% of motorized trips in Mumbai were done on buses, Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) had the largest mode share in the city; and Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System
(DIMTS) together enjoyed an average ridership of about 40 lakh daily.
The current pandemic has forced us to reconsider everything mass transit is known for. Cash and paper economy, that urban commuters and transit systems are so dependent upon, are among the most pressing challenges ahead of us. A transition to a cashless economy
is ambitious and catering to the requirements of bus ridership, its legacy systems and dependence of liquidity are crucial steps that need to be addressed.
Bus Karo XVI - Cashless Ticketing: Urgency, Opportunity and Challenges brings
together experts to discuss the challenges, interventions and future government programs such as the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) in transitioning to a cashless economy.
