Please have a look to the just published new ICT Update on "Rural Telephony". http://ictupdate.cta.int/
Apologize that most of you might have received this information already via the MobileActive mailing list. But since the 'mobiles in agriculture' discussion might sooner or later involve more than just conference participants I am sharing it here again.
Articles in this ICT update issue focus on different solutions to connect farmers in remote areas. Please look below for a selection of articles:
- The mesh potato network
A group of software experts, technical specialists and telecommunications entrepreneurs in South Africa is working to develop an inexpensive system to provide rural and under-served areas with affordable telephone communication. Customers use standard analogue telephones and a low-cost device specially developed by the team, called a Mesh Potato, that transmits calls over a wireless internet connection.
- The community call box
A pilot project to introduce payphones, connected to satellite networks, is providing telephone services to remote communities and helping to develop the telecoms market in Zambia.
- VoIP in the wilderness
With no fixed-line service and mobile phone operators reluctant to invest in rural areas, the Fantsuam Foundation decided to provide VoIP to customers on its wireless network in northern Nigeria.
Bonne réception!
