I haven’t tested fonts specifically, but I’ve done a ton of testing on images and would expect the download behavior to be similar.

Tim Kadlec extended my original test suite and documented the results across a variety of mobile devices:

That would be where I would start if you’re looking for answers beyond iOS and Android.
