
Legislative Session Begins
The 99th General Assembly officially began at noon on Wednesday with members gathering in their chambers. Speaker Todd Richardson and Senate Pro Tem Ron Richard addressed their chambers on the opening day. Richard focused his speech mainly on how the members of the chamber should conduct themselves, while Richardson made a pledge that the first bill out of the chamber would be a total ban on lobbyist gifts as well as making a quick win out of passing Right-to-Work legislation.
Further Committee Appointments
Speaker Richardson appointment the remaining committee chairmanships on Wednesday. Representative Nate Walker retained his chairmanship of the House Pensions Committee, as well as did Representative Keith Frederick on his House Health Care Policy Committee and Representative Joe Don McGaugh retained his chairmanship of the House Judiciary Committee. Representative Kevin Engler took the helm of the House Insurance Policy Committee. Representative Donna Lichtenegger will now chair the House Higher Education Policy Committee after leaving her post as the chair of the House Appropriations for Higher Education. Representative Robert Cornejo will serve as the chairman of the catch all committee of House General Laws. Representative Shawn Rhoads and Representative Jay Barnes received the two House Rules Committee posts.
Budget Update
