Colleagues,
President Barack Obama announced today a new $35 million Department of Education grant competition to train math and science students as classroom teachers. The President also announced a major expansion of STEM AmeriCorps to provide learning opportunities for 18,000 low-income students this summer, and a national STEM mentoring program in seven cities — Philadelphia, Chicago, San Francisco, Indianapolis, Ind., Wichita, Kan., Allentown, Pa., and Research Triangle Park, N.C. — sponsored by Cisco Systems, Inc.
Obama made the announcement at the 2014 White House Science Fair. While few details are available, the White House Website press release (http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2014/05/27/white-house-science-fair-fact-sheet-backgrounder) offers a basic description of the initiatives.
