Anyone interested in a 200k this Saturday, preferably starting from Twin Cities? I would like to knock out a December ride for my R12 effort. I can't ride Sunday.
I am running studded tires now so things will be a little slower.

Sorry Bob, it is fellow rando Renee Schepers 50th birthday and her birthday ride is on the TCBC ride calendar for Saturday.  Its a 50 miler, know it won't do the R12 but 50 is an honorable number.

I may be out on Sunday though.  I was thinking studs might not even be required on the pancake ride.

Bob,

Good luck on your ride on Saturday.  I have several commitments for the day so won't be joining you, but wish you well.  Let me know how things work out.  I see you are getting close to a Minnesota Natural R-12.

Everything looks reasonable weatherwise for Saturday so far but please be aware of any changing weather that would create hazardous riding conditions, including snow, blowing snow, freezing rain or colder temps.  Please be safe.  After some of the experiences of last year, we need to avoid any potential for heroic winter epic rides that put people at risk.  I know you will exercise good judgement.

I am taking December off the the bike so I can't pull you around the course this time. ;>)

Let us know how you survived on the coldest day so far this season.

Stay warm and keep the rubber (& tungsten carbide) side down ...

Bob and Jonas did the Pancake yesterday, and Michele and Gary are  currently either close to finishing or have finished by now. No winter riding for me this year, may be a few shorter night rides during the week.

Nice day for it - no winter brevets for me, but plenty of commuting.
I already told Bob, but the rest of you all - If you are thinking of studded tires, I can tell you which ones NOT to get.  Kenda Klondikes are the slowest tires I have ever ridden.  I don't expect a lot from studded tires, but these are clunky.  They seem to have excellent grip and nice deep tread, but the casing is really thick - it takes a lot of PSI to firm them up enough to get any speed out of them.
With my luck they'll last for years.

Michele and I rode the Northern Pancake 200K yesterday (Sunday). The roads were 99.9% clear. We only ran into a little snow on a few trails. But, basically we stayed off the trails in favor of the clear roads. The temperature ranged from 25-37F and I was perfectly dressed and comforable. Near the end Michele was cold as her energy stores sagged.

My Waterford is heavy, ~ 37 pounds, but that is of little consequence in this very flat course. Yet, it seemed to pedal hard all day. Partly, that is a function of my winter clothing that is restrictive and sucks energy. But the real problem was the WIND. It seemed much worse than the official 15-20 mph. It started as a WSW wind and later morphed to a SSW wind. The net result is that the best it got was a 90 degree cross wind and the last 40 miles from North Branch were directly into the wind.

It was a difficult slog. I probable worked harder on this 200 than on any I have previously ridden. Late in the afternoon, I felt like it was putting forth a 17 mph effort and only getting 10-11 mph result. Michele agreed that it was a hard day in the saddle.

But, as they say, a hard day on the bike beats an easy day in the office anytime. I got what I bargained for—lots of exercise, fresh air and a pleasant conversation with a friend. Even though I had to sacrifice watching my awesome Packers, it was worth it. Love to ride.

Nice job guys. I'm impressed. I'm still riding--but barely. I'm only getting in about 1 ride a week of around 25 miles.

Congrats!  I'm glad Bob, Jonas, Michele and Gary had a good ride - the weather was pretty good, except for the wind.

I was doing a little cross training at a curling bonspiel with Craig Futterer over the weekend, but did squeeze in a heart thumping spin class at th Y this evening.  Mostly just trying to keep the weight under control and the heart beating.

Keep it up, only 3 1/2 months until the Minnesota Randonneur season opener Populaire on March 31st.

Just for fun, who would be interested in a randonneur group spin for an hour at the Y?  It's always good to get on a bike, this way we could stay warm and have some time to chat too.  I may be able to line up a good instructor.

Gary,

Glad you had a good, if tiring ride yesterday.  Riding into the wind at the end of a ride is always tough, when it's cold it's even tougher.

The Packers didn't need your support this weekend.  I am a bandwagon Packer fan for the rest of this season.

Are you going to take a day or two off from your training program after Saturday's ride?  I think we decided, in our email chain with Bill, that winter rides do nothing for your overall fitness, but this ride may have been the exception.

The most important part of my training is proper rest. So, yes, I will take a day off today and it will be just an easy workout on Tuesday. Actually I only work hard (intervals) one day a week.

It looks like Tuesday will be as good as January ever gets. 31F at 8am, 47F at 2pm. Wind SW @ 7-8. Roads totally clear.

Is anyone thinking of a ride?

unfortunately, I'm stuck in the office on Tuesday. Good luck getting a ride together. Looks like too good of a day to miss.

Hi,

I might be interested definitely. Northern pancake would be my preference for sure, but am flexible.

Cheers,

Jonas

Gary,
Just on the way back from the Bahamas for my younger son's wedding.  Can't make Tuesday, but would be up for another adventure later on, if we get another good day.

The northern pancake, would be my choice tooo,.being it's closer to home, and I have to get kids to school first. I could do a 9 am start.
