I think we have a good group that's willing to wake up nice and early
on a Saturday (I do anyway with two kids under 2).

We'll plan to meet at the main building at 7am.

Here's a map link:
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Hiawatha+Ave+%26+50th+St+E,+Minneapolis,+MN+55417&hl=en

If you hit satellite view on this map, you'll see the building. It's in
the northwest part of the park and has red roof.

Hope to see you there!

I'm exposing my inexperience by asking this question, but I imagine it
would be advisable to bring my tripod, correct?

I would if I were you. I, personally, plan to do a little night
photography before the sun comes up. But even the early light of the
sunrise would most likely warrant the need for one.

I sure hope it's not too cloudy...

I would. It is actually fairly shadowy down by the falls, and if you
want to get blurred water style shots, you need a pretty long shutter
speed that will keep you from hand holding. I took these shots earlier
this fall. Shutter speeds were between 1/15 and 2 seconds I believe. I
just got a new 3 stop ND filter, so I"m looking to explore some longer
speeds.

I might be able to make it to Minnehaha Falls this weekend, but I'm not
100% sure yet. I should know in a few days.

Are we planning on walking down to the river?
Just wondering how long to get the parking ticket.
The last I saw the temp was going to be 10 degrees
in the morning, with a high of 20. Be prepared.

Looks like I won't be able to make it this weekend. :(

Hopefully next time...

I've got my new Lowepro photographer gloves! :)

How far is the river from the falls? I'm thinking I'll probably just
park on the street myself, but I imagine we probably won't last more
than a couple hours. What does everyone think?

If I remember, it's probably a 10 minute walk from the parking area to
the river (if you're walking quickly)...a slow photographer's ramble
would probably put it at half hour?

I think we're casual enough that a simple "wooh -- it's a might chilly"
will probably be enough. Anyone wanting to stay longer is welcome to
become an Popsicle!

Anyone know a local eatery for a hot cup and a waffle afterwards?
Highland Grill is nearby...

I know Cap's is right across the street. I don't know if they do
breakfast or not, though.

I can tell you that it took me about 20 minutes on an expired meter (on
a Saturday, no less!) to get a parking ticket at Mill Ruins Park when I
was there shooting earlier this month. <<grrrrr...>>

I wish I could make it to this trip, but I doubt that I can. Here's a
shot from this summer at the falls. Can't wait to see the results!

On channel 9 news Thurs. night, they had a shot of Minnehaha Falls in
the background.
It looks like a lot of water was going over, and the icicles were 4-6
feet long.
Looks like a good photo op.

Yep. Bright and early. It'll be cold. And it sounds like it may be
snowing, which could still make some great pics, but may hinder our
view of the falls.

Between the early hour and cold, this will separate the lightweights
from the real photographers ;-)

I'm still planning on going, but I may not be able to.
I went to SA this morning to get my quart of milk and doughnut.
I normally check the date on the milk, but I didn't this morning.
It was dated Nov. 1. Needless to say, I'm not feeling real well right
now.
I didn't drink much, 3 or 4 glups, but it was enough.
You can bet that I'll be checking them dates from now on.

Hopefully I'll see you all tomorrow.
dave.

Sorry guys, I missed out this time. We had to take our 4 week old boy
to the ER at about 3:30 this morning. He hadn't eaten since last
evening and was throwing up and dehydrated. He's still in there and I
just stopped at home for a nap. We hope to take him home later this
afternoon.

I'm disappointed I didn't make it. I was really looking forward to
meeting everyone. I hope those that did make it had a good time. I'd
love to arrange to do it again soon.

Make sure to post some of your results. It looks like even though there
was no sunrise, the falling snow was pretty nice.
