I'm just getting into studio photography (even though my house is very
small and doesn't lend itself well to setting up a studio). I've doing
some reading and plan to buy a good lighting book or two, but really
I'm a hands-on, teach-me type person.

Does anyone know where I can sign up for a good beginner lighting
class? National Camera runs some classes, but none are about lighting.
Perhaps a one of the colleges offer something I can enroll in?

I did a couple searches and didn't come up with much. Anyone seen
anything out there in the Twin Cities are?

Good luck. I took a weekend lighting seminar with Doug Beasley quite a
few years ago, but I haven't seen anything similar since.

A couple of books that you might like: "Light, Science and Magic" by
Hunter and Fuqua and "The Master Lighting Guide for Portrait
Photographers" by Christopher Grey. These books, along with one of
those dummy heads for displaying wigs and at least 1 light and a
reflector should be enough to get you going.

I'm pretty much self-taught and I've rocketed from horrible to mediocre
in only 16 years!

I have the Hunter and Fuqua book on my list to look at, but I'll also
check out Grey.

I have the light and a reflector (a 4x5' foam core poster board from
Office Max) and have been experimenting. Unfortunately I don't very
much space in my tiny house, but I'm making do for now.

Coincidentally, I just received a course catalog in the mail from
Dakota County Tech. In it are several photography classes, including a
couple that are specifically about lighting and portraits. I might look
into that a little more. Looks like they run for the spring semester,
January to May.

Just thought I'd mention it in case anyone else is looking for photo
classes. I'll post if I find out any more info.
