I am planning to ride to Spring Valley on Friday. I'd like to leave
early so we have time to eat and rest before Almanzo. I'm thinking a
departure from Hiawatha Cyclery around 3:30 AM. I mapped a 132-mile
route to Spring Valley, with plenty of gravel along the way.

I should add that anyone is welcome to join the ride to/from Spring
Valley. Like the almanzo event itself, the ride to/from is self-
supported, no sag wagon, etc.

Here's the route I put together.

I favored back roads (gravel?) rather than highways, and I decided to
not go through Rochester. Of course, you can ride as much of this
route as is reasonable until you have to split off for Rochester.

I believe that there will be 3 riders tomorrow morning.

I am somewhat firm on the early departure. My reasoning for the 3:30
AM departure is:
1. That's a really nice time to ride out of town because there is
almost no traffic. I did something similar for another event last
year, and really enjoyed that early morning riding.
2. A couple of us are going 130+ miles to Spring Valley, and I plan
for a not-too-strenuous 10 mph average including food/rest stops,
getting lost and backtracking, mechanical stops, etc. This puts us at
SV around 6-6:30 PM, in time for dinner and with more time to recover
for the race. If we get in later, there is a good chance the pizza
joint in town will be closed, which would be terrible.

I know you are going ~105 miles to Rochester, so the early departure
may not be as necessary. There may be others interested in riding
later. Anyone? Anyone?

I both envy and pity you guys. Have a great ride down! See you all at
the start line on Saturday. Sounds like the weather is going to be
great.

Saturday looks beautiful, I just hope the rain stops already. It's
probably too late to trade in my bike toward a Pugsley just for the
race...
