Unable to press and hold keys on a MacBook

I have decided to use Mnemosyne to learn German vocabulary. In making sets of cards, I must make extensive use of umlauts. On a MacBook, umlauts are easily added to letters by holding down that letter on the keyboard. However, when I hold down a letter in Mnemosyne, it simply repeats that letter, as would happen on a Windows OS. Does anyone know whether I can configure Mnemosyne to recognise a held key?

Hi,

These things are not handled by Mnemosyne itself, but directly by the GUI library it uses (Qt), so it's beyond our control.

However, there are some other ways of inputting umlauts:
