People,

I know it is possible to reset learning data on import/export but how
can I do it with existing data? eg I am learning the Greek alphabet,
get to a certain stage and then don't look at mnemosyne for while.
When I come back to it I just want to reset the data, start from
scratch, but not have to delete the data and re-import it etc. This
does not seem possible at the moment?

Thanks,

Phil.

That is indeed the way to do it.

As this is not a very common operation and contrary to the SRS spirit, I don't
really feel a pressing need to add a GUI option for it.

Cheers,

Peter

Peter,

Thanks for the note.

SRS? Software Requirements Specification?

Peter,

What does "contrary to the SRS spirit" mean?

The point of SRS programs is to turn over decisions like this to the algorithm, since it is so much more reliable and accurate than us. Our job is to be truthful in our self-assessments, and to create good questions; not to attempt to game it when things like vacation or high-stress periods block us from doing repetitions.

If, like me, you have 1600 reps outstanding, simply do your normal 100 a day and then 20 or 50 extra. Mnemosyne will adjust better than if you started from scratch.

You can reset a file with numbers, but you can't reset your own memory.

A SRS program like Mnemosyne is designed around the way the memory works. If
you reset the data, you are kind of cheating the algorithm.

I definitely agree with this in principle, and have found it to be very
effective in practice. However, I've been using SRS software for about
eighteen months now. At the six month mark, I reset my database and
started over. One reason is that I switched from SuperMemo to
Mnemosyne, but another reason is that I had decided to make my cards in
a different (and I hoped at the time, more effective) way. At the same
time, I kept my old cards, though I started them over again from 0.
Although I began studying the same material again, this switch really
helped me, and I certainly would not have done as well had I kept my old
rep data.

So, although I definitely agree that the best practice is to trust the
algorithm, there are some exceptions.

Patrick

Im going through the same export/import to reset learning data with
the following scenario:

1, created and studied 1500 hanzi with one way cards
2, create reverse card of those 1500 hanzi (in chapters) which appears
to copy the progress
3, change reverse cards into a different group, export and import to
reset their learning data.
Its a bit tedious :) but still well worth it to keep working in mnemosyne
