If I have a colon (:) in a cloze block, it renders oddly.

As an example, try a cloze card with this

[foo:bar] [baz]

I should get "[...] baz => foo:bar" as one card, and "foo:bar [...] =>
baz" as the other, no? Preview shows me:

[bar] baz => foo
foo [...] => baz

It's a feature, not a bug :-)

Everything beyond : is considered a hint for the cloze (see the docs
in the plugin screen).

Ah, ok. This is a bit cumbersome since I use a lot of code examples
and there's a lot of colons in that, but I'll memorize : I
guess...

Instead of entering sequences, you might consider free clipboard utilities such as Ditto http://ditto-cp.sourceforge.net/  or free keyboard automators such as AutoHotkey http://www.autohotkey.com/
