I'm not sure if I've been going about this the right way, but this is what I do for learning a foreign language.

I create a Vocabulary Card type... with the foreign word; the pronunciation (in phonetics) and attach a sound file of the word; then fill in the translation.

So far so good.  But I also want to to be prompted with the sound, and check the meaning.

So I wind up adding a second card for each foreign word as just front-to-back-only type.
On this card, I just put the text "Listen." and add the same sound file;  then the answer field is the translation and how to write it in the foreign language's script.

It's kind of cumbersome to add two cards for every foreign word.  Also, even though I set the mnemosyne settings to show cards "randomly", it does happen the two different card types, for the same word, are shown back to back or in very close succession.  That kind of defeats the usefulness and the scheduling algorithm.

Am I doing this wrong?  Is there a way to get what I want using only the vocabulary card type?   Suggestions?

Thanks

Hi,

What you want is basically adding a third sister card to the
Vocabulary card type which quizzes on pronunciation only.

This is the feature you need to vote for:

Hi Peter,

Ok, thanks, I have voted.  :-)

So, is/was the purpose of the existing vocabulary card type, with is three fields + notes, simply to give a structure to organize information on the card?

The purpose of the Vocabulary card type is to provide for the most common
use case when people study vocabulary :-)

Peter,

Well, yes, but ... it seems like the vocabulary card type is only different during the flow when adding/editing a card.  As far as presentation during learning/review/using, it is no different than the other card types (front-to-back-only, front-to-back-and-back-to-front) ?

No, it's not the same: the pronunciation and the notes field are always
shown in the 'answer' part, regardless of whether you are looking at
production or recognition cards.

Cheers,

Peter
