enlarge non-latin characters does not work

I'm using MacOS 12.6 / mnemosyne 2.7.3 to study Japanese kanji using three-sided cards.

In mnemosyne settings -> card appearance, I've set "increase size of non-latin characters" to 8 but this does not seem to have any effect.

all kanji and hiragana are the same size as the latin characters.

is this a known issue and is there a workaround?

The non-latin characters option is a hack that's only intended for two-sided cards. For Vocabulary and Sentence card types, just set the font for the foreign text field as you see fit.
