There will definitely be Mnemosyne on Android, for the simple reason that I
have a Android phone now :-)
There are three developers who've expressed an interest in this (Tim, Johannes
and myself), but nothing concrete has started yet. In any case, I will focus
on 2.0 itself for the time being.
Peter
To the best of my knowledge, there is currently no integrated solution
for reviewing Mnemosyne 2.0 cards on an Android device (nor a
J2ME/Blackberry one).
You can surely export your cards and import them into another app, but
with the following potential drawbacks:
* It would not be practical to continue using Mnemosyne.
* The repetition algorithm may differ (although not necessarily).
* Your statistics wouldn't be uploaded to the Mnemosyne project.
* No plugins (like gogorender for handling tricky fonts)
If you use Mnemododo or Mnemojojo, the best solution in the short term
is to stay with Mnemosyne 1.x.
I will eventually port Mnemogogo to version 2.x, which will allow
cards to be imported/exported with both Mnemododo and Mnemojojo. I
have already started porting simpler plugins to get a feel for the new
code base (it is completely different to Mnemosyne 1.x) and to help
iron out some of the remaining bugs. I can't, however, commit to a
deadline at the moment. In any case, I won't make an official release
until I am confident that it all works correctly (no loss or bungling
of valuable review data).
It is also worth noting that Peter and others have put a lot of energy
into developing a solution for two-way synchronisation between PCs and
mobile devices. The potential advantages of such a solution are:
1. allowing editing/adding on phones.
2. simpler 'one-touch' synchronisation.
3. allow simultaneous review on both PC and phone.
I think these will be great features for many users, but I continue to
believe that:
1. Editing is more convenient on a PC than a phone (easy copy and
paste from dictionaries, easy download and inclusion of images
and sounds). But the situation is less clear with tablets, and
this is the most requested feature for Mnemododo.
2. Synchronisation through the SD-card is reasonable (although the
initial setup can sometimes be tricky) and sometimes more
convenient than synchronising over a network; though not always.
3. I still don't see the point of allowing simultaneous reviews.
This isn't meant to be polemic! I believe that there is room for more
than one mobile client. And the more different their features, the
better.
Tim.
