Hello,

I've been using Mnemosyne Portable for a while now, but I've noticed that the recent 2.0 release crashes quite frequently. If anyone has any suggestions about what might be done to prevent it from crashing, I'd love to hear them. I really like how it works right up until the inevitable crashes occur.

Best regards,

Sako Eaton

Do you have the same problems when running it from the desktop?

What exactly happens during the crashes? Do you get an error message?

The only known problem I'm aware of is that on some Windows machines, the
program occasionally hangs when displaying an image. I have not been able to
reproduce this, so it's probably a system-specific bug in the library mnemosyne
uses.

Cheers,

Peter

Thank you for the response, Peter!

> Do you have the same problems when running it from the desktop?

I am using the portable version because I am not allowed to install software on the office PC where I've been using it, so I don't really know if the same problem occurs on the desktop, but I can try installing it on a PC of my own to see what happens.

Is it possible to copy the data from my portable installation over to the desktop installation for testing purposes?

> What exactly happens during the crashes? Do you get an error message?

There is no error message, I'm afraid. It simply stops responding, and Windows 7 shows its spinning disc cursor until the application is forcibly shut down.

This almost invariably happens just after choosing a number after reviewing a particular item, although it doesn't seem to make any difference whether the number is chosen with the keyboard/keypad or by clicking the buttons in the application.

I haven't been using any images in my situation, so I am probably not encountering this particular bug.

I'll try it on the desktop and see how that works, but it would be best if I could get the portable version working reliably, so if you have any additional ideas, please let me know.

Thank you!

Best regards,

Sako

To test it on your desktop, just copy default.db to your Mnemosyne
data directory, which is probably C:\users\saka\Application
Data\Mnemosyne (not your program directory C:\program files\Mnemosyne)

If it always hangs on the same card, feel free to mail me your
database privately, tell me which card it is, and I'll have a look at
it.

Cheers,

Peter

I don't think images is a factor; 2.0 frequently hangs on my Win7 x64 (usually 1 or more times in 50 cards), and the cards do not have images.

What do you know, there's been a new PyQt release this week!

I've made a new development release with the updated PyQt, hopefully this fixes the issues:

Like Scott, I have also noticed that 2.0 frequently hangs in 64-bit versions of Windows 7. In 32-bit Windows, it seems to work without problems.

Does the recent development release do anything to improve performance in 64-bit environments?

Current data indicates that it's a problem with certain database files
rather than with the actual program. Can you try creating a new dummy
database with a few dummy cards and see if that hangs?

If that works, feel free to mail me your database privately.

Okay, I tried creating a new database with 12 cards. Testing that dummy database on a 64-bit version of Windows 7 resulted in Mnemosyne hanging before I could finish that set of cards.

Thank you, I'll do that.

This looks to be the same bug that I am experiencing, using Mnemosyne 2.0 (not Portable version) on Windows 7 x64. The program hangs after selecting a number for grading the card, and when restarted, it will give me the same sequence of cards, starting two or three cards before, and will hang at the same card if I select the same number. If I select 0 or 1 it won't hang, and most of the time I get the problem with selecting 2 or 3. Images are not an issue as my card set needs unicode, but nothing else special. I'd be happy to send debugging information if someone tells me where to look.
