Hi all,

I need help with this program (I'm using the latest version).

- I uninstalled the program in order to get rid of the set of cards I was using before (there is no obvious way of closing a set once its open). I used the uninstall program and then used CCleaner and *3* different registry cleaners to clean every last trace of Mnemosyne. Then rebooted. Then installed the program anew. Imagine my surprise when my old, unwanted deck of cards appeared in the newly-installed program!

I want to open my large comma-separated text file as a brand new set of cards. I want nothing to do with the cards I was using before uninstalling the program. If I try New, I am invited to open a database, and my file is not a database file, so I can do nothing here. If I select Open, again I am asked to open a database, so I can do nothing here either.

If I choose Import, it just adds the entries on my comma-separated text file to the cards that are already open, which I do not want!

So my questions are:

1) How do I close the open cards and get rid of them entirely? There should be a "close" option in the File menu.

2) If I manage to close the existing cards and import just the cards from my comma-separated text file, how do I then convert those cards into a Mnemosyne Database?

I really like this program's look and simplicity (compared to Anki) and would dearly like to get around the above issues. I have read the PDF user guide for this program, but it does not cover things like this.

Please help me - thanks!

Hi,

Just do 'file - new' and then overwrite the default database (default.db).

Good luck!

Thanks, Peter.

I've managed to load the cards I wanted (because I have a new installation of the program) and managed to save them as .db file.

My next question is: how do I load a completely different set of cards without them just adding to the database I already have open?

Thanks!

PS - I think I've found a bug which I will report in the correct place

Hi,

In theory, you can make a new database with 'file - new'. However, this is not recommended. It's much better and more flexible to add all your cards to the same database, and if you want to study subsets of cards, use 'activate cards' and its 'saved set' feature.

Good luck!

Thanks, Peter, for your rapid response. I prefer the separate databases method, so have figured it out now. Great! Thanks again.

As you have noticed from the popup you get when creating multiple databases, this is really not recommended.

Putting all your cards in a single database has the advantage that you can have cards that belong to multiple saved sets (whereas a card can only belong to a single database). Moreover, it's much easier to sync a single database than having to remember to sync all of them separately.

Still, you can create multiple databases if you really want. As for that feature being hard to discover, it's just 'file - new' and 'file - open', exactly the same mechanism as for working with multiple documents in e.g. Word, Excel, thousands of other programs. I can't see how to make this any more obvious, but suggestions are obviously welcome.

Cheers,

Peter

Peter, I agree that 'File - New' and 'File - Open' are standard and clear enough. But at your invitation for suggestions, this thought came to mind: It might help some users if the name of the menu was changed from 'File' to 'Database'. Even for me as a long-time user of Mnemosyne, I never think of the DB as a file in itself -- probably because I never interact with (open, move, copy, renameit directly as I do with text, spreadsheet, image, and sound files. Instead, I encounter the database only within Mnemosyne itself, hence it seems to be a part of the program rather than a file with independent existence.

Hmm, not sure I follow this argument, as by that logic, in Word the menu should be called 'document' instead of 'file', in Excel 'spreadsheet', etc...

(please reply at the top, that makes it easier for people to find your post).

The 'De(activate) cards' menu option can be used both to activate and deactivate cards. Just check and uncheck the checkboxes of the tags and card types.

Good luck!
