April 13 Tuesday 7 PM ESP (East St Paul) Minnesota Speculative Fiction
Writers Davannis Pizza and Hot Hoagies -- East Side 310 White Bear
Ave, Saint Paul, MN 55106 651-738-6992 How to find us "We'll be in
the back meeting room. We're easy to find."
Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, April 13th. The topic will be
Writing Strong Endings. We don't always have the conclusion worked out
in our mind while the piece is in progress. Or, there are those
evolutionary processes when the plot takes an unexpected twist and you
are stuck with devising a new ending. We'll be discussing ways to work
through those challenges and come up with satisfying conclusions.
We're a friendly bunch and welcome new members anytime. Our aim is to
help each other become better writers by giving feedback on our
works-in-progess. Although we call this a Critique, don't let the word
scare you! This is a respectful process to help make our vision a more
polished reality. We offer objective encouragement and support--and
that is a good thing!
To list an item for critique, go into Files in the drop-down box and
enter it with the prefix [ESP Crit 4-13]. The deadline for posting is
April 6th, one week before the next meeting. We can accept only three
items and the word limit is 10,000. We prefer the items be listed in
RTF (Rich Text File) so it's accessable to both PC and Mac users.
Come and check us out at Davanni's at our next get-together!
April 15 Thursday 7 PM Retrofits Writers Group, Lunds Market (Uptown),
1450 West Lake Street, Minneapolis, MN 55401
Retrofits is NOT an official workshop of the MinnSpec writer's network,
but we do post notices of our meetings here so that prospective members
can find us.
The Retrofits writer's group has been in existence for about seven
years. Retrofits used to be associated with MISFITS, but is currently
independent.
Here's how Retrofits works: any member may ask to have the rest of the
group critique his/her work. The piece to be critiqued is should be
posted in the files section of the MinnSpec site a week or more in
advance of the meeting. In the header it should be labeled [Crit RETRO
date] along with the story title. We do a round robin style critique
with members commenting verbally on the major things that they like and
dislike about the work. Members often give the person being critiqued a
written copy of the story with minor suggestions also.
Perspective members are welcome to sit in for a meeting or two. We are
primarily oriented towards speculative fiction, but have also covered
other types of writing for members.
