Rivendell Society: Our December discusion will be on Dec. 8, in a
locale to be determined, and it will be our annual "Readings from
Rivendell" discussion, where members and occasionally other locals read
their own original Fantasy and SF-related stories, poems,
novel-excerpts, songs, essays, etc. Let me know if you have something
you'd like to share.

December Meetup Topic: "Maim 'em right!" (Medicine in SF) Gang --

This month's Meetup topic is "Maim 'Em Right!" Characters get sick,
wounded, or suffer other medical mishaps in stories. How can you make
certain that you get your medicine right? Fellow member Stella Evans,
doctor and SF author, will be joining us to discuss how to wound your
characters with both flair and realism.

Join us in the community room at the Uptown Lunds for eating and
greeting with your fellow speculative fiction writers. New or inactive
members, this is a great opportunity to connect or reconnect. If you've
had a sale or publication, bring your happy news - - if you've had a
crushing rejection, let us commiserate.

If you haven't attended a Meetup at this location before, here's the
scoop: Lunds in Uptown has a community room upstairs that is quiet,
free and has great bus access. Even better yet, it has a fabulous deli
but is not a restaurant. So we can brown bag our own lunches or buy a
lunch there. The deli selection includes salads, sandwiches, soups and
sushi. If you are going to be getting your food from Lunds, please
arrive fifteen minutes early to pick out your food before the meeting.

SF Writers' Workshop
The SF Writers' Workshop will immediately follow the regular December
Meetup. If you'd like your work critiqued at this session, please
upload a members-only file to the Files section of this site no later
than December 6. The first five stories submitted before that deadline
will be critiqued at the December workshop.

Lois McMaster Bujold Reading
On Monday, December 17, LOIS McMASTER BUJOLD reads her fiction. Ms.
Bujold is the author of over 20 books, including The Warrior's
Apprentice (1986), Barrayar (1991), Memory (1996), Komarr (1998), and A
Civil Campaign (1999). Much of her work centers around the diplomatic
adventures of interstellar troubleshooter Miles Vorkosigan and his
parents. More recently she has started two fantasy series, including
the novels The Curse of Chalion (2001) and Paladin of Souls (2003), The
Sharing Knife: Beguilement (2006) and The Sharing Knife: Legacy (2007).
She is the recipient of multiple Hugo and Nebula Awards. Her Web site
is www.dendarii.com.

Lois is a genius, and her readings are always engaging. You don't want
to miss this one.

Following the reading, there will be an informal gathering of SF
Writers and Fans at Dulonos for beer, pizza and awesome conversation.
Please join us!

Retrofits Writers Group

Retrofits is NOT an official workshop of the Twin Cities Speculative
Fiction Writers Network, but we do post notices of our meetings here so
that prospective members can find us.

The Retrofits writer's group has been in existance for about four
years. Retrofits used to be associated with MISFITS, but is currently
independent.

Here's how Retrofits works: any member may ask to have the rest of the
group critique his/her work. The piece to be critiqued is to be
forwarded to the facilitator at least one week in advance of the
meeting. We do a round robin style with members commenting verbally on
the major things that they like and dislike about the work. Members
often give the person being critiqued a written copy of the story with
minor suggestions also.

Perspective members are welcome to sit in for a meeting or two. We are
primarily oriented towards speculative fiction, but have also covered
other types of writing for members.

Questions about Retrofits can be directed to Ricky Foos, who is
TCSFWN's official liaison with the Retrofits writing group.

You can drop Ricky an e-mail via this link: [link is bad]

Thanks!
