I live on 73rd and West Shore Drive. I've been told that DSL is not
available here and nobody has indicated if or when we will get it. They
did introduce IDSL for those of us too far from the CO. But the cost is
too high for me.
Its priced higher, because it costs the telco's much more to provide,
provision and install (ie. for VISI's IDSL offerings, our ISP fee is
about the same for any type of DSL we provide, the differing costs on
the base account levels are due to the telco costs).
RADSL and SDSL run over a simple dry copper pair. IDSL has to run over
an ISDN line, with the appropriate repeaters if needed, and all that
entails, so you basicly still end up buying an ISDN line from the
telco, in addition to some extra fees to route that ISDN over an ATM
network back into the ISP.
If we could force the telco to set the price lower to be more
competitive, we certainly would try, but the simple fact of it using
so many more telco resources makes it a much more costlier solution,
even if it is much lower bandwidth.
