I've heard that there are various providers of DSL speed or better, which
have wireless access if you have line of sight to the IDS or perhaps other
large-ish buildings in downtown Mpls.

Would be very curious to hear about the plans available, pricing, and any
experience folks have with these services. Is it a "service of last resort"
pricing model, or are reasonable deals (e.g. less than $100 a month) able to
be had?

I called them but they don't service the area I was interested in (White
Bear Lake/Dellwood)

They will come to your area if you bring them enough customers. For example,
5 business accounts or 15 residential accounts. So if you're in a strip mall
or something like that and know 4 or 5 other guys there who are looking for
some options, you could go to these guys and they will put up a mini-tower
for you.

that's what he said, anyway.

1 gb per day is about 33 megs per day.
that's just plain silly.

these folks are a mickey mouse operation, if what you read below is true.

Most likely what it means is that they don't have the ability or the want
to subsidize a new customer base until they can reach critical mass in
their business plan.

It costs DirecTV and Dish Network nearly $400 for each new customer. There
are similar costs in any service that discounts the hardware up front in
hopes of making it up on montly/annual fees.

The option that is availiable from the IDS is run by WorldCom. Supposedly,
you get the same Service Level Guarantee's as if it were a leased line.

A friend has a small consulting company and used this option to get high
speed for his client in Hudson. They had to put up a 70 foot tower for the
receiver, but that was the only major expense.

They have had one outage due to a lightning strike frying the modem, but
they were back up and running in under 3 hours. Not too shabby considering
the tech had at best a 1 hour drive through rush hour traffic to get there
and swap it out...

ok here's there scoop.

not a horrible deal if you have no other options. what I had in mind was
potentially to go the 1 megabit option and then try to sell wireless access
to my neighbors. much better latency than going the satellite route.

included in these fees are web hosting for up to 5 domains, total web space
10 megs - these hosted domains are on worldcom's bandwidth not your own. IIS
on w2k or else Linux running Apache. These are in a worldcom data center.

no adult content allowed and probably other content restrictions

dollars 1/2/3yr down up
contract speed speed
209/188/178 384 same 5 static ip
279/251/237 512 10 static ip
349/314/297 768 512 10 static ip
499/449/424 1000 512 15 static ip

installation and hardware usually $1000

1, 2 and 3 year contracts. 3 year waives install fee, the guy said

for MCI you call 866-926-6327

this sounds interesting.
