Looks like the stores were bought by Buffalo Wild Wings. wtf??
*shrug* not my favorite Mexican place by a long shot. The Woodbury and
Eagan locations were always packed and loud.
The one in Eagan closed a few weeks ago and is becoming a BWW.
Good riddance. If you want real Mexican food go to the West Side or to
Lake Street.'There are a few others too in various spots.

If I wanted real mexican I could go to El Gordo's in Knollwood. I also
found out
that the Baker's Square on Blake is closed! Their food was execrable except
for
the pies. Where am I suppos3ed to get my Easter Pies?
Dan Mercer
Not any more. I was there a few weeks ago and found it under new
management with new recipes and a new menu. They were billing themselves
as Tex-Mex now. The quality was way down from the old days.

Faith Covenant Church in Burnsville used to have a 2 or 3-day pie sale
before Easter and Thanksgiving -- It was a fundraiser for some outfit (I
don't think the church had anything to do with it but I could be wrong)
ã BIG truck parked in the lot, maybe 6-10 different kinds of frozen
pies. They were decent and reasonably priced.

WHERE IN THE WORLD CAN I FIND THE SARA LEE KEY LIME PIE (FROZEN)???? I
can find it in WI but can't seem to find it here. I've asked several
grocers to get it in to no avail. I can't tell you how good it is.
Yummmmm. And it's huge so it feeds a lot of people. I rather enjoy
eating it rather in a frozen state then defrosting it. And it's Cheap!
Maybe $7 or less. It would make a wonderful Easter pie.

More important, where the heck have you been?
That is just it...I don't want real Mexican food. I don't have
time to spend 3 or 4 days in the bathroom trying to get regular
again, and ketchup is my favorite spice. I want the toned down
stuff that doesn't upset my stomach, and I want to play with the
chips while I am waiting. A Don Diego & Diet Coke made for a
great lunch, and it wasn't all that much for such a nice place.

Looking for that Sara Lee pie!!! <G>
AnnE who has been frozen for months!
I saw it two weeks ago in the freezer case of my local Cub Foods -
White Bear Avenue right off Highway 36. You might want to call your
local Cub and see if they'll get it in for you. Both Rainbow and Cub
have cheerfully ordered specific food products for me on request.
Thank you, by the way, for mentioning it. I love Key Lime pie but so
many versions of it are not good. I saw this in the freezer case and
just stood there debating with myself whether to take a chance on it.
I finally decided not to risk it and settled for the Sara Lee
strawberry pie. Uck. It had no flavor at all. So a couple days later I
did what I should've done in the first place and made my homemade Lime
Supreme pie. But maybe I'll try the Sara Lee pie for our Italian
buffet potluck party in a few weeks.

Well, our local Cub kinda just laffed at me........several times. The
box is rather large and they probably don't have room for it.
I've tired to get Palermo Pizza at several grocery stores to no avail
either. Tried writing directly to them but can only find the margherta
ones at Sam's or Costco. I vhant the supreme one.

Now, I must tell you that this is a fluffy kind of pie...not real limey!
That's why I liked it. I hate eating my own key lime pie cuz it smacks
the lips! lol And not only that, the key limes are really small these
days. Really! <g>

I know the feeling. I don't generally notice the weather when it's bad
but I'm getting weary of this.

Surgery went well. Now the hard recovery begins.
Nah, I really haven't been too bad this winter. As long as the sun
shines, I don't care what the temp is out there. <g> This is March tho
and it's time to bring on SPRING.

Not my favorite either (but the Acapulco and others "genuine" restaurants have
sold out and are glorified fast food with cheap beer], but Don Pablos did have
GREAT salsa (although the chips could have used some work).

Have you tried Chevy's? They appear to have 2 locations left in
the twin cities. They have a concept called "fresh mex" where
they focus more on the veggies and getting flavors that way
rather than through various types of hot sauce. I like their
food a lot, but I hardly ever find an excuse to go there very
often.
Admittedly, I can't relate to your problem, as I eat insanely hot foods
and have no physical side effects from it :) but, I know many people
for whom a few dashes of black pepper is spicy and I've gone with them
to a number of mexican restaurants (introduced them to a number of them
as well) and they do just fine. Not all mexican food is crazy hot and
spicy.
Burrito mercado in st paul has a great deli with all sorts of tasty
meats for tortas, burritos, or tacos. Casa Lupita up in white bear has
some good tasting tacos and burritos, and their chimichanga (while not
really mexican) smothered in their enchilada sauce is like crack in a
sauce, the stuff is that addicting :) . Their mild salsas are just
that, mild but tasty, and for those reading that like hot sauces, Casa
lupita's super hot salsa is oh sooo yummy. I buy jars of it from them
for home use.
Boca Chica has also some good selections for all tastes from bland to spicy.
While I can't agree that don pablo's food makes for a great lunch (yes
i'm somewhat picky), I understand the simplicity of it, but there are
alot of things at the various authentic mexican places for all palates.
Andy
I read the article about the Woodbury location becoming a BWW (BW3).
I'm scared that the Maple Grove location is going to go that direction
as well. I agree that although DP's isn't authentic or accurate, it
certainly is good! It's one of our favorite "casual dining" spots.
It's not always economical (or feasible) for us to drive to St. Paul
from here to get a quick bite to eat. I have found that El Loro in
Crystal is quite good, but still not quite the same. I enjoy Don
Pablo's for what it is, americanized Mexican food.. and I hope they
don't all go away.
Yes that is one of the others I was talking about. They are one of the
best and really close to Grand Ave for a quick hit on Grand Old Days.
Another great spot. Cinco de Mayo celebration coming and a good s0pot
to get the energy for the Cumbia Dancing.

I'm still sad that they closed down their location in downtown
Minneapolis.. :(
I don't get to St. Paul much.
Well, I first tried Don Pablo's in Texas before they even got to MN and
it was absolutely delicious...the fajitas were so special that it was
something you'd never forget. When they first arrived on 494 in
Richfield the manager had the same last name so we got to know him.
Back then the fajitas weren't quite the same as we remembered in Texas
but they were close. Thought maybe that being a new restaurant here and
needing to work out the kinks that it might get close but it never
happened. Too bad.

Last time I ate there -- months and months ago -- it was a rousing
disappointment. I'd enjoyed it other times.

Chips at Chili's are good -- thin and crispy. Easy to fill up on them.
:-/
When they got that "new" machine in I thought it went to pot. lol
Haven't been there in a long time and we used to go to the one in Eden
Prairie when the girls got into town. They loved the place. Maybe it
was the Margaritas! ;o)
When ya start messing with menus..........well, need I say more?
AnnE
I have been to the downtown location a couple of times over the last couple of
years and I wasn't all that impressed; especially for the price. Probably on
par with Don Pablos in all honesty.
These days, if I want mexican or "tex mex" or whatever you want to call it, I
just go to Chipotle.
El Loro, like Accapulco, is fast food with a bar. The last [and only] time I
went to the Crystal location, I wasn't all that impressed. I have been to the
Coon Rapids location with a similar opinion.

I've come to prefer Qdoba. Have you tried them?
Yes, I believe I ate at one in Eden Prairie ... at least, that is the name I
believe it was [I just tagged along with a bunch of fellow co-workers a couple
of years ago].

They are all over, but mostly in strip malls, so they don't
stick out. Their signature item is the wide variety of very
interesting salsa's that they serve with the chips.
In traveling around, I have seen a number of similar places
in smaller towns called El Tequila and Margaritas. Has anyone
tried either of these places? For example, Farmington has a
El Tequila.

I'm pretty sure the outlet mall in Woodbury is no longer there.

Whoops! The *outlet mall* is no longer there. That mall folded a few
years ago.
Thanks for the tip, Dan, I'll give em a call. Btw, that outlet mall is
gone but I thought they built one across the street, west of there.
Haven't been to it but do drive by occasionally.
AnnE
Half of the outlet mall building is still there. They torn down the
east of the strip and put up the new Wal-Mart. The east side strip
still has a couple of the old outlet stores but they are moving out.
The Eddie Bauer outlet just closed within the last year and the space
remains empty. I don't remember seeing Sara Lee lately so they are
probably gone as well.
I noticed that Faith Covenant Church in Burnsville is having their pie
sale -- probably through today. Put your snowshoes on. . . . . I've
got about 7" on my driveway.
Too popular to like? :-)
How do you improve the chips?
What was the new machine?
Do you know if the La Cucaracha's other location (there is one in Woodbury)
is on par with the one in St Paul?

well....art is the eye of the beholder. I pursue Tex_Mex with a
vengance... but I haven't been in the Twin Cities for 5 years.
I see Citysearch has a pretty decent star rating system that
correlates with SOME of my experiences with Mexican, Tex_Mex in the
Minnesota area.
Anyway... I was never enthused with teh FOOD at Don Pablo's.... but
impressed with Eden Prairies Chevy's and the old gringo Cintia's
had outstanding chile Rellenos and basics.... And the infamous and
short stay Cafe Lindoh? in Glencoe had to die for mole sauce, pico de
gallo and ceviche fish salad (lotsa octopus!). El Loro in savage was
not bad. Never tried Sonora's in Hutchinson. Pepito's 38th/Chicago
was terribly overrated, regardless of Tommy Kramer's obsession.
I forgot the name of the decent place in St Paul. Don't even remember
the street. It was south of I94
That gringo thing in Brainerd...Carlos and Billy's?... can't recall
the name.. has to be one of the worst. For me , the only good taste
or value in that town is Appleby's.
I wish all could experience Xavier's in Dallas. I never tried their
ceviche.. I suspect you have to go to Mazatlan or LA for that. And
their mole sauce is a blur to me ( I can't eat mole sauce anymore. An
allergy is in there. Maybe a certain chocolate. It actually can put
me in a hospital...pulse rate 188!!? I know some here wish I'd eat a
tub of it. What a way togo. Some mole is ok but I can't chance it.
I don't like going to emergency rooms again just to check it out).
But back to Xaviers's. It's like a gourmet Tex_mex. Kinda like Tommy
Toys does chinese in San Francico.
