My wife and I have been talking about dumping the landline and DSL for
a Comcast package. Late last week I put in the order, and will be
installing a cable modem on a test basis.

On the day I put in the order, our DSL inexplicably dropped from 3 meg
to 1.3 meg. I've rebooted the router several times, checked that no
cabling has been disturbed, but it won't train up anywhere near 3 meg.

The last time I tried a cable modem I got a max of 640k down. I'm
installing it very near the outside line this time, and we'll see if
we can get some better throughput.

I use mediacom (mediacrumb?)

They're alright, not as good as a smaller shop with actual people though.

Problems I have are that once in awhile it breaks down, call them up (when
the phone works.. I use VOIP & don't have a cel phone) they tell me stuff
like "install more RAM". (thats not it, I assure you)

When it does work, it's good. Download speed is good (some-what pointless
over 9mbs, since most web sites throttle it anyway..)

But upload speed totally SUCKS. I'd much rather have less download "wait for
their end to send it" and more upload speed. (especially for things like
VOIP or updating my radio stream)

Latency is sometimes awful, but generally good. (I don't know if thats my
problem or theirs, could be my end)

Cable companies tend to view internet the way they view cable, something that
is "piped in" to the consumers household. To a cable company, the internet is
like the home shopping network.

Overall, I'm pretty happy with them but I think cable is too expensive, they
really shouldn't charge more than say, $40.00/month for the full deal,
considering they run advertisements and their DNS is set up to do the same.

There in lies the difference.....methinks. Here it is DVR/+ one
cable card/internet/digital phone. They say that card is FREE but ya
have to pay $6.95 for the "service". And which also says that I
should be getting a remote for that service and I don't. <G> Plus if
I upgrade to having a box on that TV instead of the card, it will
certainly cost me more. Maybe $3.00? I can't remember. Yeah, I
think....going from the $6.95 to $9.95 for the box. I already pay
too much for all of this. lol I should write Tony Werner at Comcast
in PA. heh. Back when he was with Rogers and then Paragon he sat on
my family room floor trying to figure out a problem I had with cable
and between the equipment he brought in and also all the other guys
that came with him, they figured it out....'twas a problem with the
mainline and the bridgers going up and down with the sun and weather.
I struggled with this for about 3 springs and 2 falls. lol

Hmm, I think we're on about $100/month up here for 'net (4.5meg
down, 1.5meg up), landline and TV (basic package, no HBO).

The nice thing about that is that it's not on one of those stupid deals
where they hook ya for x months and then the price suddenly shoots up! :-)

Have you looked at how costs will compare? Today I'm going to start
my process with Frontier to get my DSL more reliable for VOIP. I can
live with a 350kb upload speed, but having around 80% of the packets
making it through just won't cut it. I've looked at cable options but
they seem so much more expensive, especially if all you want is
internet. Granted they can give you a deal to get started, but I
don't want to have to play a game with them every 12 months to keep
the rate reasonable.

And in general, recent talks I've had with the cable company have re-
enforced my long standing impression that they are simply not focused
on customer satisfaction. They still seem to have the mindset of who
else you gonna get cable from?
