Hi all,

I’ve inherited an iPad from a relative who died recently. I’m trying to get into it so that I can reset it and use it, and I’ve got what she told us was her Apple ID. I’ve tried the apple support app and apparently her Apple ID is inactive. So now I’m confused.

I’d be very grateful if anybody could tell me if there’s a way to get into this iPad that’s apparently locked to a nonexistent Apple ID, or factory reset it, in any way that doesn’t involve some dodgy geezer down the tat market please.

Obviously that’s my worry - if I take it to the store or whatever, they’d probably assume I nicked it. I’ve got no way to really prove that I’ve got it legitimately and frankly I just look a bit sketchy…

So I’d really appreciate any help.

Thanks!

Jo M

Hi Jo

Sorry for your loss first.

Did you get given a password for their AppleID? I’d be tempted to try and login online at appleid.apple.com - that may help work out if the account is inactive or not (I’ve not heard of accounts becoming inactive not to say it’s not possible). If not, you may be able to activate it, or do a password reset to re-enable it. Then you’d be able to unlock the iPad hopefully or if not, a factory reset would eventually prompt you for the password to unlock it.
The store will only have issues it it’s been logged as stolen to the police. Behind that if you have the password they can’t do much else. I’m sure the store staff would be as helpful as they can be given the circumstances.

Hope you manage to help it sorted.
