Happy New Year!

My partner has been using her Gmail account for quite a while now and
as we initially had to set it up as a POP account using Mail on an
iBook G3 under Tiger, she was quite happy using it.

Over Christmas the iBook wouldn't charge and I had to do an emergency
rescue of all her mailboxes and transfer them to a new user on my iMac
before the battery died.

Now I know Gmail also now has IMAP. So my question is: can I now
change the settings in Mail 3 to change her Gmail account from POP to
IMAP and preserve all her archived mails and mailboxes so she can get
access to everything via Gmail IMAP?

Thanks

Chris

Happy New Year to you too!

Yes. I've done just that. You do have some faffing about though:

1. You'll need to move the mail from the local mailboxes over to
folders you've created in gmail;

2. Actually, mail.app in Tiger has such awful IMAP support that I've
switched to Thunderbird. I've heard that mail.app in Leopard isn't
that much better on the IMAP support front.

HTH,

Richard

How's Thunderbird's iCal / Address Book integration on the Mac? I've
stuck with Mail.app so far because of this but I'd swap to Thunderbird
if they've sorted that bit out.

Good question and one I should have mentioned - I use a custom build
of T-Bird integrates read-only with the Address Book. I'm not that
keen on iCal so I don't know.

And truth be known, I've become very accustomed to the web interface
in gmail, so 95% of my email is done in a browser window now. I've got
T-Bird running all the time to capture everything if my connection
drops or if I want to send an email without the "sent via googlemail"
garbage.

Cheers,

Thanks Richard. That's working a treat now.
