Dear all, 

I bought a G4 Xserve on Ebay with, among other things, the following in the description:-

It has a clean install of leopard server ready to boot.

Could I canvas a few views on what people would expect on reading that?

My interpretation is it is ready to go i.e. no installation of server software required by you on receipt.

Also I would take it is it has been freshly installed i.e. clean and uncluttered for you to go.

Hi Patrick,

To me, this means that it will have OSX server installed (all xserves came
with the unlimited version of OSX server, the G4 xserve probably came with
OSX 10.3 panther ? server).

'It has a clean install of leopard server ready to boot' means you probably
wont get any serial numbers or disks with it.

As with all things ebay Œcaveat emptor¹.

You have it exactly. Leopard Server is installed but working through
the set up process that kicks in when I fire it up sees me stopped
dead when I'm asked for the license key. The only option is to perform
an erase and install of 10.2 Server.
Incidentally, I never bid on anything that describes itself as having
lots of good stuff included on an evaluation basis. I'll only bid on
stuff that includes the original discs and a license key.

i have to say i'd expect the g4 server to come with 10.4 discs and
serial - it would have come with them from the factory, and even
mentioning the 10.4 OS in the listing is pretty useless without them.
'ready to boot' is a misrepresentation without the license key as you
can't boot into a useable OS.

This is just a guess.
When I sold my iBook I did a fresh install and powered it down at the
first reboot so when the buyer switches it one he/she gets the "Welcome
to Apple" screens so he/she can put their own identity in.
My reading of "clean install ready to boot" would be something along
those lines (all just guess work cus I've never seen a Mac server).

That was what I thought would be the case so you can understand,
notwithstanding Dilip's thoughts, that I was somewhat surprised to be
met with a screen asking me to enter a license key. When I asked the
seller about this he said that it does not come with a license for
Leopard and that he used to run it on 10.2.
I have now got a genuine copy of Leopard Server, the 10 client
version, on ebay for £150. I think I would have been within my rights
to file a complaint through ebay.
