A difficult question, and my extensive research really isn't giving me
any answers! People either have a biased opinion and argue without
facts, or they have a tv to sell and want to make me buy the one they
make the most money on!

I have looked at both types, both seem very similar to be honest. I
was worried about screen burn in plasmas for a while but I understand
thats not an issue anymore, is that correct?

Our TV is on a lot, 8 hours a day I would guess, usually playing to
nobody but still on regardless. We watch mostly drama and
documentaries, but I like a film now and then. We would hook an XBox
360 up to it and maybe a Wii, I don't have a blu-ray player but will
buy one sometime soon. We have virgin so have access to their limited
hi-def channels too. The smallest I would want is 37", I wouldn't
mind a bit bigger but its not essential.

I like the Samsung LCD's, but people seem to rave about the panasonic
plasmas. Some of the Panasonic plasmas you get a lot of tv for not a
lot of money, are they good value and just cheaper to produce than an
LCD, or are they cheap because the tech isn't as good now? I don't
really have more than about £700 to spend, I might be able to go to
£800 but if I don't need to I won't! Remote controls are important,
and the ease of use, my son really struggles with menus and controls
so it needs to be logical really.

Any tips to help me out?

Sony Bravia... can't go wrong with them imo, and the service from sony is second to none! {trade the micro$not box for a ps3 and voila : blu-ray player, games machine, stream movies, download movies, music jukebox, photo slideshows, internet connection for youtube etc.} and the remotes are really clear to use, and usually universal {we have a dvdrecorder, bravia and a modded dvd player for region 2 discs, each remote can access the other's controls...}

hth, and no don't work for sony, just a bit of a sad fanboy!!

:-)

We've got a 37 inch Panasonic plasma. Had it for a couple of years and been very pleased with it. Has a good viewing angle which may or may not be important to you. All eh usual connectors plus ours has a digital and an analogue TV receiver for that old fashioned out of the ether stuff!

Don't forget that if you want a stand for whatever you get, they can add a fair bit to the price(they are usually priced without the stand)

Picked up a 32" Sony Bravia in October last year. Top stuff. Not sure about the plasma/LCD comparison. Worth watching the last few episodes of HD Nation (revision3.com/hdnation) for some buying tips.

My bravia has about 4 HDMI ports, USB port, component in, optical audio in, etc. I have a DVI-HDMI cable I use for my laptop and a 3.5mm jack for the audio which does well. Nice to see a mac on a 1080p TV.

Also I would try and get one that does Freeview HD (DVB-T2) just cos.

Yes the last episode of hdnation 06/04/10 talked about LCD v Plasma. Just seems to come down to how bright your room is and if direct sunlight hits your tv. If this is not a problem then go for the cheaper plasma option, and then you can go for an bigger sized tv for the cost saved.

Ive had a big panasonic plasma for years and it has served me very well

Most lcds have the ambient light sensor, adjusting the screen brightness to that of the surroundings. my bravia has a "x" coating on the screen which cuts out glare by y%.... guess it's just a question of potatoes and spuds??

I've been looking at the HDTVs on display at Tesco, & even when
they're showing supposedly HD pictures, they all seem to have a slight
problem with ghosting - there'll be a spurious shadow of (say) the
footballer running across the field or whatever. Do you guys that have
LCD HDTVs have that problem or is it just that Tesco are numpties &
can't set up their tellies right?

I've noticed this too. Half tempted to just stick with CRT, yes it's
huge but you get good results. HD would be nice but I'm very fussy and
a bad picture will really annoy me!

It's easier to live without a telly and just stick to the wireless,
you don't get any ghosting.

Considering you pay a huge amount for this "high definition", you'd
think they'd get the pictures right.

I've not noticed ghosting myself. I wouldn't take display models as
final proof. They often run those demo videos that are meant to show
the difference between HD and non, which is rubbish, and they are
never configured correctly, usually set for max brightness to look
impressive.

I would try the Amazon reviews for a model. That's probably a reliable
source for info.

Some Sony sets have motion flow which is all about the MHz to stop the ghosting. I've seen a few Sony motion flow sets in folks homes and they all look nice. Looking at sets in a row in the store I find really hard, to easy to compare, but not too sure what you are comparing - I like colours on that one, but this one is sharper - there's only one way to find out!!

I think it was a home hifi article that suggested Sony for LCD or panasonic for plasma, but ended by saying it was a personal preference thing most of the time.

Cheers
B.
