Dear all,

I think I might head down to the Apple store on Tuesday to get an
iPad. I find myself wondering if any of the people on this list who
got the wifi only model have regretted it and wished they'd stumped up
the extra for a 3G model. I think I might go for the 32 Gb wifi
version and I'm don't think I've ever felt the need to check my emails
anywhere there isn't a wifi signal but I'm just wondering if anyone's
thinking: "wifi's great but, actually, it would have been really
useful to have 3g." Perhaps a 3G dongle would be the answer if I
wanted 3G.

I've also got resale values in mind.

Thanks,

Patrick.

Have a 32Gig wi-fi, but tbh bought it primarily for use by my boys (7, 5 and 3) in the house, and as everyone may confirm, you find uses for it. So may get a 64gig 3G for business useage, but 3G's not so important to have on the road, iphone does ok for emails... No regrets, other than not getting 2 at the time.

Patrick,  Haven’t got an iPad yet, but for my use I would need to go for the 3G just to get the GPS.  -  John.

I bought the 3G as I had no clear idea how I was going to use the iPad. I think I would definitely have missed the 3G, as I've frequently found public wifi to be sluggish, intermittent, or just unavailable. I looked at it as a £100 experiment to see how the iPad would end up fitting into my life, since there's no compulsion to actually pay for 3G. It turns out to have been very handy for me, and it's saved my iPhone battery no end. It'll probably save me paying for extra data on the new iPhone contracts too..

My iPad has no problem with the BBC site (or any other for that matter). For me it's a classic Apple innovation - it's a breakthrough product, and the decision you have to make is not about an iPad versus a MacBook but whether you will find an iPad useful at all. For me it's the ideal tool to carry for my business: I can write (Pages) take written notes (Paperdesk) read books (GoodReader), listen to music, watch video, use the web, read and send email and many more things. About the only things I have so far found that I cannot do on the move with my iPad are writing and testing code (there are code editors but no test environment for PHP) and book editing (I can read in Word documents but Pages on the iPad has no comment function).

did you turn the volume up? were there videos uploaded to the machine? can the nexus produce spreadsheets, email letters with tables and pictures or have a really cool, instantly recognisable, and sometimes despised corporate logo inscribed in beautiful, yet recyclable aluminium?

;-) buy an iPad, you know you want to.... go on, take the plunge, you'll thank me in about an hour of opening the box... go on, seriously, log off, go to the local applestore, demand they sell you one.

I wouldn't say PC World is an ideal test environment. You have no idea what their wifi network is like, and what content filtering they have.

Saying that I did see an iPad in the Apple Store struggle to load the BBC Homepage over wifi but I think it was just a moment of trouble as it had no issues with other websites.

And worth noting that if you want to access BBC video you need to locate the beta version of iPlayer on iPad, - on the iPhone it defaults to the HTML5 version, not on the iPad.

Having said all that, I’ve found the beta iPlayer works beautifully – connected via the vga adapter to a decent projector it looked like it was giving me something very close to 720p. (The specs are confusing.)

EyeTV talking to my iMac is also close to worth the price of admission on its own.
