Google'ing turns up loads,

I think it will be really slow, whatever you get. In my experience they seem to 'just work' on the Mac, without any driver to setup. Its worth checking the manufacturers website to see if they mention the Mac though.

Hopefully if you are planning to access old discs they are still ok (floppies seem to have a limited shelf life.)

I understand that floppies are  slow in operation, the reason for wanting one is to upload some photos taken on a Sony Digital still camera Mavica MVC- FD7.
The camera has been used this morning after four years in storage.

They don't make cameras like they used to, Those old Sonys are pretty rugged, about 8 years old, and still going strong.

Have you all seen this article which I've put below? It's from the San
Francisco Chronicle and makes me wonder whther I have the latest update to
Safari. I'm using 1.3.2 (v 312.6). Could anyone tell me if I'm up to date in
terms of security. I'm using o/s 10.3.9 as I'm on a 400 MHz PowerPC G3.

Any comments would be welcome as I don't get many chances to talk to Mac users
down here in the West Indies.

Here's the article's URL.

I'm not sure what threats they are refering to but my Safari is
version 2.0.3 for OSX 10.4.6. If you are on the internet you can try
a 'software update' to see if there are any security updates you
need, Go look in you system preferences, and get it to check for you.
This is the easiest way to keep your Mac up to date, shame it
doesn't do all the third party application updates too :-(

The 'threats' are to do with the way an application can pretend to be something else and get Safari to open it automatically. Really the danger is no different to if you double-clicked the file yourself, and as long as you set Safari to not open files automatically you're pretty safe. The lesson is, always be sure what files actually are before you double click them.

John Gruber, as usual, puts all this into admirable perspective:

Robert,

Thanks for the reference to John Gruber - I didn't know of that site.

As you say, he succeeds in putting things into perspective.  That said, however, it would be good to know of a site or writer who can convey such judgements without the use of irony.

For those who are less expert technically, it is difficult correctly to identify irony and, that being the case, the writing can easily become a source of yet further confusion.

So, how about it?

David.

Hello All,

My free access to Oxford English Dictionary on-line via my
university, looks as if it will shortly come to an end.

An individual subscription is more than £200 p.a. so I wondered about
the CD version.
Briefly, Version 1 was available separately as a Mac version.
Subsequent Versions (2 & 3) have not been prepared for Mac.

I am presently using a CD version of Merriam-Webster's 11th
Collegiate Dictionary and Thesaurus which for many purposes is useful
many times a day, but it does not contain any significant
etymological detail.

Several questions:

1. Does the WIndows / Mac distinction on playing CDs still apply?
2. If it does, is there a CD Dictionary of anything like comparable
range to OED available in Mac format?
3. If it doesn't, would you suggest that I risk buying the ordinary
(i.e. non-Mac-specific) version?
4. Does anyone have some other 'steers' for me?

TIA

David.

The OED is built into OSX. Just control-click on a word, and you get
a "Look Up In Dictionary" option in the context menu that appears.
Also, there's a Dictionary app that provides a more specific
interface where you can type in search terms.

Hi Matt,

I think I understand David's dilemma. The built in dictionary is not
the same as the OED.

As an example, if you double click on this word - set - you'll get
about two A4 pages of information about the word set.

On the other hand, the OED has about fifty pages (maybe more, I've
heard) for this one single syllable, three-letter word!

Cheers,

Richard

Thanks Matt,

You made me explore that facility more closely - although I am using
10.4.6, I cannot get to the Dictionary by way of the advertised short-
cuts - so I have to open the Application separately - but is more
useful than I had remembered - thanks.

Thanks also to Richard: you have understood what I was trying to get

Yes, I see what you mean - although Apple's OSX page calls it the
OED, it's obviously one of the reduced editions, like the shorter or
concise OED, or possibly an OSX-specific edition.

Matt,

Further to my earlier reply, I have now sussed my earlier problem
about not being able to open Dictionary by the usual short-cuts:
Dictionary must be in the root Application folder and not inside a
further folder (I have my applications grouped in further folders).

Two improvements in one morning! Now I must get on with reading
scripts and commenting (but not marking!), a task I have avoided
since yesterday's breakfast.

David.

If you have an Intel Mac, you could always use boot camp or Parallel to access the Windows version.  Parallel(and I've only read the review in MacWorld) would look to be a good bet as you would not have to reboot to use XP to access it)

If have no idea how it works, but for, example, if it's done as a Windows CHM file, you could use

CHMOX (you can get it from sourceforge) - this works for O'Reiley e-books

Don't forget: droughts in London.

We may not have had a dry weekend in about 6 weeks, and perhaps the
wettest May on record, but all the BBC news can report is that there are
droughts in London. I'm convinced that there are places that are
officially considered to be desert that have droughts less frequently
than the South East of England.

...

Back on topic... The handy Tiger weather widget shpuld tell you it is
'Mac' weather all the time!
