There's nothing on the iPhone 3Gs that makes me think that's the one
to have apart from the improved performance. The improved camera and
video recording function don't do it for me, compass looks like fun
but I've managed without thus far.
So do those with experience of the 3G and 3Gs feel that the
performance increase is worth the extra £100? Is there anything more
modern about the 3Gs that makes it worth the extra £100?
Thanks in advance

The performance boost alone is worth the extra, without a doubt. Additionally the better camera and video recording are very nice to have (much better than the pure pixel count increase would lead you to believe), and the compass just makes Maps more useful. I also find myself using the voice dialling/voice control more than I would have thought. It's more reliable than any other system I've used, and very useful when the phone's in your pocket.
For some, the accessibility features will be worth the money on their own.

To be honest I've not found that. I still routinely drain the battery, but that's because there's so much to do with the iPhone. I turn the screen low and turn off data when I'm overseas, and then it lasts days and days..

I've found it perfectly usable for navigating on foot or in the back of a taxi. It's got me out of a few situations that way in fact.
