According to Macworld, UK prices for the ipad are available from play.com, who will sell the device as well as Apple.
http://www.macworld.com/article/146977/2010/03/ipad_uk.html
The 16gig model will be £499 and the 32gig model £699.

Ouch.

The important thing is the premium for the delayed 3G version, according to FT:

Apple said it would start accepting orders for the machines next Friday. They are priced from $499 for WiFi-only editions with the least storage capacity. The 3G iPads will range from $629 to $829, with monthly connectivity charges on top. "
And what would they be I wonder!
Have you noticed something about the exchange rate, like er, 1:1 ? I know the old greenback is on a high at the mo' but it is still ≠ 1.50. £ prices s/b ⅔ of dollar US. They really think we are stupid or what?

I fear they've changed the pricing here too...

http://www.apple.com/ca/ipad/specs/

go to the very bottom of the screen and press the pricing button... presto it brings you back to the ipad 'home page'.

was looking for to spending around $800 canadian fo a mid-range 3g model!!

maybe they realised they've overpriced?? - wishful thinking i know....

I don't think it's that they think we're stupid, Microsoft do the same with Windows. It's an ongoing punishment thing for being better/more cultured etc ;-)
There is the fact that US prices are displayed without tax, where as UK prices have VAT added.

Microsoft might just make some inroads into this market, if the price their foldable touch screen device is sold for is right.

I also saw predicted prices a few weeks back putting the low end Wifi
at £389.
The fact is until Apple say so, if price is a big issue, then you may
as well just wait.

You can't just look at the current exchange rate and compare. As David
says, we immediated add 17.5% for VAT, whch the US pays later. Also
they need to hedge their bets on the exchange rate. If they stick to
it one day, the next day they are either making more, or losing money.
They have to cover their heads for Market changes.

So related, has anyone seem the Microshaft Courier video? Does it
appeal to anyone more that the ipad?

Don't forget to add import duty to the US listed price and only then
add the VAT.

I saw a cartoon that depicted how it will work, as opposed to a live demonstration of how it does work. The difference there could be profound.
That said, if it works as the cartoon implied it would, then I suspect they might just present Apple with some serious competition. The closable nature will appeal. It's much more book like and if they add a decent ebook reader that uses both "pages" then it will make more sense as a reader. The iPad looks flimsy, like the screen might break quite easily if knocked and you just know that if that happens that the replacement cost will be close to the original purchase cost.
The asking price will be the clinch. Microsoft, of course, are somewhat tied by whichever hardware manufacturer they've gone for.
The only other downside to the Microsoft device is the likelihood of it being infected and needed some damned anti-virus solution which will slow it down and add to the cost. (When will they ever learn?)

I found quite an interesting piece on why the Courier won't ever exist here. I thought that one of the most pertinent was that Microsoft don't actually make computers for the mass market, by and large what they do is make software.

Pity really - what hardware M$ do make, they make really well. Sadly
their rep for software lags behind. They should stick to making really
bloody good mice, for use with Macs. ;-D

My only problem with the courier video is that its use case is very narrow. If you're a design-type person, it could be ideal, but are you going to use it in an office, instead of a laptop to answer emails, write docs, etc, and you're not really going to use it to do details image editing or Illustrator-style documents are you?

M$ do make the Zune, or at least they conspired with another company to make the case and components for it. If they want to deliver an experience, they either need to set hardware requirements to run the OS, or pair up with some hardware partners.

zune? xbox?

not really world leaders in their field. didn't like the menu system on the zune, and couldn't make my hands fit around the xbox's control pads.

imo they should stick to producing sub-standard software that needs updating every 2-3 years with 'x' amount of service packs in between. this way at least they keep the service industries alive in india and far east!

Hi there If such a device could be floded to close it and the way the OS was shown relay worked that way then this device would in my eys be way cooler than the iPad.

you can still operate osx without the updates, and without fear of virus intrusion. service packs are just a nicer way of saying, we've found another major security flaw, download this else your pc and all software / documents will be obsolete within days...

anyhow, off to the micro$not forum to do a bit more windoze bashing  ;-)

Hey, be nice people,
All of the discussion about Mac updates vs Windows patches is personal opinion & usually ends up in a flame war that heads into Godwin's law territory.

Let's keep the thread on topic, and not bait each other.
There really is no answer to either side of this argument, so lets play nicely :^)

I am sorry if people think I am baiting or inflameing things.  I perhaps should have inluded a " :-) " in my post.

As for ipad price I have notised that on Apples web site thay have removed the "price" link so what the price.  But if I rember the £ price for the iPhone after tax in the UK was the same as the $ price before tax in the US.  So if this is/will be the case with the iPad then the basic iPad will be £499

If we're running a book on the UK price for the iPad basic model, put me down for £388 :)

Neither of you should take anything personally & a smiley can go a long way to help indicate your tone. I think a lot of people like the friendly nature of the MMUG chat list and the Windows vs Mac debate rarely ends in happy threads.
