My power lead on my macbook pro is playing up. The connector itself is getting very hot and it cuts out if the wire moves, you have to wiggle it about for a while until it works (ohhh-err) and if I move the machine a tiny bit it cuts out again.

I had it replaced about a year after I got it, my 3 years of AppleCare runs out any day if it hasn't already, can't remember the exact day I got the machine delivered but I'm sure it was late November and not into December. There are lots of articles online talking about faulty magsafe leads and Apple replacing them out of warranty, anyone know anything about this?

I was hoping mine could be replaced free of charge, mainly because its only just out of warranty - I just have not had a chance to get to the Apple store or I would, just too busy but the leads been playing up for a few weeks now - but also because there seems to be a design fault with them, the wire looks in perfect condition is is obviously not been abused.

Any idea if I will get lucky with this? Am I better off talking to Apple over the phone?

If you go to https://selfsolve.apple.com/GetWarranty.do you should be able to find out what warranty if any you've got left on your Macbook Pro.

Cheers,
Richard

'Please note: Your product is no longer covered for service and repair. You will be charged for the costs of any repair.

Thought as much.  I have heard of people just getting new leads, anyone know if this is likely?

This is a known manufacturing fault. There is a MagSafe page on apple site with picture of problem. We took out of warranty connector & MacBook into Applestore a month ago. They just exchanged it

That's what I wanted to hear. Mine isn't split though, as in the pics, I hope they treat it the same.

Did you need to take in the laptop? Did you book an appointment or just turn up?

Hi Marc,

I have a spare magsafe charger you can have for free if you want to collect it. I was burgled last year and they stole my macbook but not the charger so it's just sitting here doing nothing, so you might as well have it.

Wow thank you Dan! Will it power a 15" MacBook Pro do you know? If it doesn't then I won't take it and let it go to waste, if it will I'll snap it up thanks!

Looking at apple's website the macbook charger is 60w and the pro is 85w, however looking at forums the 60w WILL charge a macbook pro if it turned off or asleep so i assume it would trickle-charge the pro while it is on. It's your call whether you want to take it and try it out or not. I'm in Coventry by the way.

Hi

In our house we use a range of Macbooks and Macbook Pros and are constantly swapping the mains adapters for each machine.

The lower powered Macbook Charger will work fine with a Macbook Pro, but it will take longer to fully charge the battery. So you should be fine, Marc.

It has got to be worth trying to get one out of Apple first, always knowing that you have a back up in Coventry.
