I've just had the blurb from 'Talk Talk' offering me an 'upgrade' to
'phone+Broadband (up to 8meg)' for £14=99, or Bb only for £19=99. I
dislike being bounced in to this kind of package, never mind the
curious logic of less costing more. I know the subject has been aired
recently, but does anyone have up to date reccommendations? I think
it's only because my exchange has been 'local loop unbundled' recently.

I had TalkTalk as phone only with package giving free evening and w/e
calls. On checking 3rd bill I found I was being charged for all calls.
Including all texts. Complaint and eMails produced no response
whatsoever so they lost a customer and I wouldn't touch them with the
proverbial bargepole ever again.

O2/BeThere have been good to me for Broadband. My sister just switched from Tiscali (literally today) and said they were really helpful over the phone helping her get her desktop PC hooked up wirelessly.

I've also used Virgin for over-the-BT-lines broadband who were also pretty good.

I have Virgin as an ISP.  It's very good(20MB) when it works, which is a very high proportion of the time.  If it goes wrong(e.g. my cable modem went awol) the technical support is a bit dire.

But given the choice between cable and copper I'd go for the cable solution, based on my own experience with NTL(now Virgin) and horror tales from friends who use ADSL

As ever, your mileage may differ

I have Virgin cable. As Rick says, it is very good until it stops. It seems to depend on who you speak to and you have to go through the`Try this first' rigmarole on every phone call. One infuriating little sod told me that I did not know the difference between bytes and bits and 500k was OK on a 10M service.
Eventually I got someone who asked for the modem ser. no. and then said he would send a new one. Simple problem, easily solved but took a month.

Thanks to all for your help, it's much appreciated. It looks like
Plusnet might be a good bet (I can't have cable out here, canal water
rots it....), they come out well in the surveys even if they are a BT
subsidiary so far as I can work out. (I should perhaps have said that
the TalkTalk upgrade blurb was a result of their takeover of Tiscali,
who I'm with at present). If I read it right, Plusnet are offering
4Mb for £11=99/m, which I think is pretty good on copper?

Has anyone got a copy of OSX4 that will run on my G3 laptop and do
they want to sell it?

I am with Plus Net and have been for years. They are good, but be
careful which package you go for as they have a range of options and
the cheaper ones are bandwidth restricted ( by service ) most of the
time ( quite severely ). For unlimited package ( bandwidth not
download ) you will pay about £19.99 a month I think and this has a
20Gb per month cap.

Just to echo Dom's comments, I've been with Be for some time now and
can't fault the service. Now O2 have bought Be they are offering great
Broadband deals especially those who have iPhone or other O2 mobiles.
Pay Monthly or Pay as you Go can get the broadband rates here...
o2.co.uk/broadband

£7.34 for 8Mb unlimited is pretty good!

Cheers
B.
